LIBERTY ? Drew Billard stopped using his umbrella after the fourth hole at Grossinger Country Club.
Billard, a Sullivan West junior, figured he was getting soaked with or without the umbrella.

?It was wet, very wet,? Billard said.

A steady and heavy rain poured down on the golf course during the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association boys' championship tournament Tuesday morning.

The greens couldn't handle the water, making conditions unplayable and forcing league officials to suspend play at 11:20 a.m.

The field of 50 golfers will resume their rounds where they left off at 1:45 p.m. Thursday. Golfers played eight to 10 holes.

A complete list of the partial scores was not made available.

Monroe-Woodbury senior Nick Marotta and Warwick senior Lucas Durland each shot a 3-over par 38 on the front nine. Billard was 4 over through the first nine holes.

?We got the coaches together before we started and we asked if anyone had any reservations about playing,? said Dick O'Neill, a member of the OCIAA golf committee. ?They all agreed to play. The kids wanted to play.

?We thought we could get it in, but at a certain point it became unplayable due to the rain.?

Fallsburg senior Rich Elliott, the defending champion, didn't bring rain gloves and said he was rushing his shots in attempt to keep his grip as dry as possible. Elliott started the tournament with a bogey and two double bogeys. He finished the front nine at 6-over 41.

?In weather like this, you are not playing to have fun,? Elliott said. ?You are playing to shoot a good score. I think I'm still in pretty good position.?

Meanwhile, rain has forced the cancellation of many other athletic events on Tuesday's schedule.
