RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton sought to work out a unified strategy on the crisis in Syria in talks with Saudi officials on Friday as further violence stymied U.N. efforts to convince Damascus to implement a cease-fire.
Clinton's talks with Saudi King Abdullah and other officials come ahead of a 60-nation gathering of the "Friends of the Syrian People" in Istanbul over the weekend aimed at finding ways to aid Syria's opposition. The U.S. is hoping to help unify the splintered opposition's ranks while pushing for humanitarian aid and further isolation of Assad's regime.
Saudi Arabia, along with fellow Gulf nation Qatar, has called for a more aggressive approach, including arming the rebels and carving out a safe haven inside Syria from which the opposition can operate.
International opponents of Assad are struggling to pin down a strategy on Syria as a peace plan put forward by U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan has so far failed to get off the ground. Syria has accepted the six-point plan, which includes a call for it to implement a cease-fire, but so far there has been no halt in fighting, and the opposition suspects Assad has no intention of stopping his crackdown and is only playing for time.
Assad said Thursday that he wants the plan to succeed, but insisted that the opposition must first commit to a cease-fire as well. Annan urged the Syrian government to halt its troops first.
"The government must stop first and then discuss a cessation of hostilities with the other side," Annan spokesman Ahmad Fawzi said Friday. "We are appealing to the stronger party to make a gesture of good faith. ... The deadline is now."
"Clearly, we have not seen a cessation of hostilities and this is of great concern," he said.
Syrian activists say fresh fighting erupted Friday between soldiers and rebel fighters in the country's northern Idlib province. More than 9,000 people have been killed in Syria's violence since last March, according to U.N. estimates.
Clinton arrived in Riyadh and began talks with Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal, the Saudi Foreign Ministry said. Saudi official news agency said Clinton then met with King Abdullah in his palace in Riyadh, along with top Saudi intelligence and security officials.
"Clinton will hold extensive talks with Saudi counterparts on the situation in Syria and on American efforts to stop bloodbath in Syria," a Saudi Foreign Ministry official in Riyadh said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he not authorized to discuss the talks.
The talks came a day after an Arab League summit in Baghdad, where divisions among Arab nations over Syria were clear. In a sign that they see little hope in diplomatic efforts from the League, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and other Gulf countries sent only low-level officials to the summit. In the end, the summit issued a joint resolution that held little new beyond expressing support for Annan's efforts.
President Barack Obama has publicly challenged Assad to leave power, but has refused to entertain U.S. military options to achieve that end. Washington has said it opposes military intervention in Syria, fearing that it would fuel an outright civil war that could break along dangerous sectarian lines. The opposition is born mainly from Syria's Sunni Muslim majority, while Assad's regime is backed by his own minority Alawite community, a Shiite offshoot sect.
For the U.S. and its allies, Syria is proving an especially murky conflict and one with no easy solutions. Assad's regime is of Washington's clearest foes, a government that has long been closely allied with Iran and anti-Israel groups Hamas and Hezbollah. Saudi Arabia and other Sunni-led Gulf countries are eager to see Assad's fall in hopes of breaking Syria out of its alliance with their regional rival, Shiite-majority Iran.
But the Syrian opposition is chronically fragmented. The Syrian National Council, a nominal opposition umbrella group based abroad, has limited authority on the ground. Syrian army defectors have set up a military leadership based in neighboring Turkey, but they too have only nominal command over the multiple armed rebel groups inside Syria. The U.S. has warned that al-Qaida and other Islamic militants are also taking advantage of the turmoil, attacking Assad's regime and trying to gain a foothold inside Syria.
And unlike Libya, whose leader Moammar Gadhafi inspired worldwide revulsion, Syria still has allies in Russia and Iran and a formidable army of its own.
On Thursday, Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, vowed to support Assad during talks with the prime minister of Turkey, a country which was once close to Damascus but now backs the opposition.
"Iran will defend Syria because of (its) support of the resistance front against the Zionist regime and is strongly opposed to any interference by foreign forces in Syria's internal affairs," Khamenei said. "The Islamic Republic of Iran is categorically opposed to any plan initiated by the U.S. regarding Syria."
Asked what might constitute success for Sunday's Friends of the Syrian People meeting in Istanbul, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said, "We want to see as much unity as possible among those members of the opposition." She said conversations also would focus on humanitarian aid and further isolating Assad's government.
That is the same agenda as the first gathering of the Friends of the Syrian People, in February in Tunisia. There, the nations issued an ultimatum to Assad to end the hostilities, but it was roundly ignored.
Speaking Tuesday, Clinton cautiously welcomed the Syrian government's endorsement of Annan's plan. But Assad now has to make good on the deal, she said, citing the Syrian leader's "history of overpromising and under-delivering" when it comes to pledges of peace and reform.
Clinton said the U.S. and its allies would spend the next few days helping Syria's primarily Sunni opposition refine its vision of an inclusive democracy, to assure minorities still supportive of the government that they'd have a place in a post-Assad future. She said Washington hoped for progress on that front this weekend.

If the new incarnation of "Squares" stays true to the original, two contestants (one representing "X," and the other representing "O") will compete for prizes in a trivia-styled game where the show's stars are situated on a giant tic-tac-toe board.

After the question is answered, the contestant can choose whether to agree or disagree. If the contestant is right, they capture the square; if he or she is wrong, their opponent wins the square. LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Aerosmith has reunited with Jack Douglas, who produced the band's key 1970s albums, and quietly recorded a new studio album even as its lead singer traded jokes with Jennifer Lopez on "American Idol."
Steven Tyler said Aerosmith was finishing two final songs for the as-yet-untitled album, its first since 2004's "Honkin' on Bobo," and that he expected it to be released in about three months.
Joined Wednesday by Joe Perry, Tom Hamilton and Joey Kramer at a Los Angeles mall, Tyler revealed three track titles: "Legendary Child," ''Beautiful" and "Out Go the Lights." Earlier in the week, the band announced that its 18-stop US "Global Warming Tour" begins June 16 in Minneapolis.
"We will not let you down," Tyler told reporters and cheering fans.
The "Idol" judge is engaged to model Erin Brady. Asked in an interview about what will be his third marriage, Tyler joked: "I cannot stop falling off stage and falling in love."
Tyler said he reached out to Douglas ? who produced 1974's "Get Your Wings," 1975's "Toys in the Attic" and other seminal albums from the multiplatinum Boston band ? and the other group members joined him in Los Angeles. The group's 15th studio album will feature tunes built around guitar riffs from tour jam sessions and some previously shelved songs.
"We have a lot of songs that are very dear to us that we've written over the years," Tom Hamilton said. "And we can feel it when it's the perfect time to whip them out. And we're having that kind of experience now."
Tyler said he had used elements from tracks that didn't make previous albums.
"All the things that are left over aren't necessarily finished. So we take those riffs and we do them again," he said. "Because they are Aerosmith riffs. They're our children, so to speak."
The four members of the band ? guitarist Brad Whitford did not attend ? arrived at the mall in separate vehicles but seemed in good spirits and played down their famed infighting.
Tyler acknowledged that the band had argued over which songs to include: "Are we going to Tom's or Joe's or mine? It's always a fight. And plus it's a whole lot more," he said. "I think what you guys should be worrying about is the fact that we're still together after forty years and what you're about to hear, which is a new record. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised."
Perry had leveled criticism at "Idol" in the past but credited the show for lifting Tyler's spirits.
"He's having a great time. I think he's happier now doing it, frankly," Perry said.
Hamilton said the band will benefit from Tyler's experience on a live television show: "Everything from how to appear to the public, how to go for it. ... As long as the rock is there, everything is cool."

Manmade mounds shaped like orcas, condors and even a duck may be the oldest evidence of animal mounds outside of North America, according to a former University of Missouri anthropologist.
Writing in the magazine Antiquity, Robert Benfer, a professor emeritus, describes a series of mounds, some more than 1,300 feet (400 meters) across, in coastal valleys in Peru. Archaeological evidence at the sites pegs some at more than 4,000 years old.
"It's going to shake everybody's views," Benfer told LiveScience. "The previous oldest animal figures were at Nazca and they're 2,000 years old."
The Nazca Lines are simple stone outlines of animals decorating the Nazca Desert in Peru. Like the newly discovered mounds, they may have had ritual significance. In addition, the shapes likely coincided with the constellations these ancient people saw in the Milky Way.
Strange shapes
Benfer discovered the mounds while looking at satellite photos of a site about which he'd long held suspicions. The feature seemed shaped like a condor, he said, but archaeological wisdom suggested that animal effigy mounds were a North America-only phenomenon, with few exceptions, such as one at a Central America site in Mexico.

The satellite photos revealed furrows that looked like teeth as well as a burned charcoal area perfectly positioned in the spot where the eye of the bird would be. Global positional system (GPS) information and an archaeological investigation of the site convinced Benfer that he was, in fact, looking at a condor-shaped mound, with the eye likely being a site where offerings were burned. The condor is oriented according to astronomical rules: It lines up with the most extreme orientation of the Milky Way as seen from the Chillon Valley where the mound is found. Next to the condor is a second mound, this one oriented toward the spot where the sun rises on the day of the June solstice, the start of summer. This 1,062-foot-long (324 m) mound appears to be a combination puma and alligatorlike cayman, Benfer reported. Stone pillars, plastic structures and ancient ceramics are associated with all of the sites.
Astronomical markers
In another Peruvian coastal area, the Casma Valley, Benfer discovered two additional birdlike figures, both "looking" toward the June solstice sunrise. Most likely, he said, these mounds were built under the direction of astronomer-priests. The ancient civilization that constructed the mounds would have depended on astronomical clues to know when to plant and harvest crops, and fish, Benfer said. This astronomical knowledge would eventually turn up in the Inca civilization in the 1400s and 1500s, which recognized the same constellations.
"This was the beginning of a very long tradition," Benfer said.
The oldest of the sites dates back to 2200 B.C. Benfer plans to return to the mounds to extract organic material for more precise radiocarbon dating, which is based on the time it takes that carbon to decay.
The four large mounds are only the tip of the iceberg, he added ? he has explored only five of the 54 valleys along the Peruvian coast and has found numerous smaller mounds, including ones shaped like orcas and even a duck. Many unexplored valleys likely hold more mounds, Benfer said.
"It's a totally unexpected find," he said. "It's especially unexpected to archaeologists like me who had walked over some of these sites before without realizing what we walked over."
