Sony's Xperia Tablet Z Can Really Make a Splash

Sony introduced the Xperia Tablet Z on Monday, touting its thin form factor and powerful components at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Sony has been in the tablet market since 2011, when it introduced the Android-powered Tablet S, but the company now seems to be making a more serious play.

Firefox OS heading to Brazil, Mexico, Poland, Spain and more; Huawei device coming soon

Not content with a simple Deutsche Telecom announcement, Mozilla's using Mobile World Congress as a platform to launch its mobile operating system in a slew of markets. Rolling out in waves, the first round of devices featuring Firefox OS include the likes of Brazil, Colombia, Hungary, Mexico, Montenegro, Poland, Serbia, Spain and Venezuela, with more markets soon, according to the company. The first round of handsets include devices by Alcatel, LG and ZTE. Mozilla also let slip news of a forthcoming handset from Huawei, who just capped up their own MWC press conference. As you'd expect, there's a whole slew of carriers on board. You can find the list in the release after the break.

The Best Alternatives For Every Pre-Loaded iPhone App

The iPhone comes with a bunch of apps you never use. Some of them are poorly implemented. Others are lacking important features. Fortunately, there?s a whole world of developers offering some very viable third-party alternatives. Unfortunately you can?t delete the apps your iPhone comes with, but here are some alternatives that will free you from their boring grips.

Messages ? GroupMe: This is hands down one of the best ways to text, especially amongst different groups of friends or colleagues. The best part is it?s totally free, on any platform you can think of, and compatible with SMS. Free

Mail ? Mailbox: Mailbox totally rethinks your relationship with email, teaching you better habits through its unique interface. The only catch? A waiting list before you get to try its wares. Free

iCal ? Sunrise: Sunrise pulls in your Google and Facebook Calendars, shows you the weather for the day, and gives you directions to scheduled events using Google Maps. It even lets you wish someone a happy birthday via text without leaving the app. Also? It looks beautiful. $2

Camera ? Camera+: Technically there?s nothing wrong with the stock iOS Camera app. It?s just that Camera+ will make your photos look so much better with lots of filters and more powerful editing tools. $1

Videos ? GoodPlayer: Never run into a video format that your player won?t support. GoodPlayer works with everything from AVI to Xvid to Dvix to FLV to pretty much anything else you can throw at it, so you can watch whatever you want without having to convert it first. $3

Notes ? Evernote: Like Apple notes, Evernote syncs your jots across devices. But it also lets you do extra things like record audio, search for text in images, save tweets, and so forth, all across multiple platforms. Free

Clock ? Rise and Shine: Waking up to a harsh, incessant buzzing sucks. Instead, you can use an app that monitors your sleep patterns and wakes you naturally up to soft light or soothing sounds. $1

Reminders ? Checkmark: This is a great alternative because of the location-based aspect. For example, when you pass by the dry cleaners, it will send you a notification reminding you to pick up your fresh slacks. In some ways, it?s what Reminders would be if Reminders were Google Now. $5.49

Calculator ? QuickGraph: Say for some reason you need to do some higher-level computations. No need to dig up your old, expensive TI-84 ? you get all of the same graphing calculator functions in QuickGraph. Free

Stocks ? Stockwatch: This gives you more than just basic data. It pulls from more than 50 different exchanges. It?s much more customisable in that it lets you make your own tickers, to see just how poorly each of your portfolios is performing. $2

iTunes ? Spotify: I don?t even use iTunes anymore. I just pay Spotify?s $11.99 monthly fee to stream all the music I want to my iPhone. Trust me, it?s worth it. Free download, $11.99/month subscription

App Store ? App Shopper: The App Store is not so much good for discovering hidden gems, but App Shopper will keep you up on all the newest apps. It frequently features deals, and lets you know what?s good and what?s not with tons of third-party reviews. Free

Contacts ? Brewster: There are about a dozen ways you can get ahold of someone, which makes for a messy address book. organisation on your own is tedious, but Brewster pulls together all of your contacts from Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, your address book, and more into one place. Free

iCloud ? Dropbox: iCloud is an OK service, but Dropbox is much more user-friendly and works across all of your devices on every platform. Anything that?s easier to use is always going to be better. Free

iBooks ? Kindle: Amazon just has a better, cheaper book selection, plain and simple. And if you aren?t exclusively using Apple devices, this reader app will work on whatever you?re using. Free

Voice Memos ? AudioMemos: This app is a little more advanced than what you get pre-loaded. You get more control over editing the audio and you can make longer recordings, among other bonus features you won?t find in Apple?s offering. Free

Maps ? Google Maps: Here?s an absolute no-brainer. Apple Maps sucks and will probably get you lost at some point. Google Maps is wonderful and reliable. Free

Browser ? Dolphin Browser: Safari certainly leaves something to be desired, but Dolphin Browser is built especially for mobile. It?s gesture-based, fast, and just an all-around good alternative for browsing the web on your phone. Free

Compass -Compass+: The regular compass is kind of pointless. Compass+, however, lets you choose different themes, and more importantly, is integrated with Google Maps. $1

Podcasts ? Instacast: It?s not quite as feature-packed as other alternatives like iCaster, but Instacast might just be the most user-friendly podcast app out there. And honestly, pretty much anything is better than Apple?s halfhearted effort. $5.49

Cyclones Have Moved Past 'Worst Game' Vs. Texas Tech

AMES ? Statistics told the grim tale of Iowa State?s early-Big 12 season loss at Texas Tech.

The Cyclones snared a season-low three offensive rebounds.

They eked out an also season-low 51 points.

They only made six 3-pointers in 23 tries.

?I think it was our worst game,? ISU guard Tyrus McGee said.

Ancient history?

?That game seemed like two years ago,? said Cyclone coach Fred Hoiberg, whose team (18-8, 8-5) faces the winless-since-then Red Raiders (9-15, 2-11) again in Saturday?s 12:45 rematch at Hilton Coliseum. ?We?ve moved past that.?

ISU ? the nation?s fifth highest-scoring team at 79.3 points per game ? has totaled 70 or more points in eight games since the loss in Lubbock.

The Cyclones lead the country in 3-pointers per game at 9.6 and have hit at least 11 from beyond the arc in five straight.

?I don?t think anybody hesitates,? said McGee, who paces the Big 12 in 3-pointers per game (2.6) and long-range accuracy (45 percent).

Not even Big 12 leading rebounder Melvin Ejim?

?Not even Melvin,? McGee said.

Recruiting shooters is a no-brainer for Hoiberg?s up-and-down, transition-fueled system.

Six Cyclones have sank at least 18 3-pointers this season.

Five, including the versatile Ejim, are shooting 36 percent or better from downtown.

?The biggest thing I try to instill if these guys is confidence,? Hoiberg said. ?If they have an open look I encourage them to take the shot. That being said, if it?s not your night or you come down and take rushed, contested ones, that?s not what we want.?

That?s what happened in Lubbock, where ISU?s offense became as stagnant as Hoiberg?s seen all season.

Why?

?They switched a lot of the ball screens,? Hoiberg said. ?I thought we got impatient. We stopped moving the ball. Teams have done that since and we?ve handled it much better.?

The Cyclones struggled from the outside just once in the past eight games ? in the first of two wins over Baylor.

Wednesday, ISU rebounded to go 11 of 28 from 3-point range against the Bears, with point guard Korie Lucious leading the way with four.

The hot-shooting night ended a four-game road skid and kept the Cyclones tied for fourth in the standings with Oklahoma ? two games off the lead.

?All the guys were doing stuff different, like trying to do different things as rituals just to see if something else would work so we could get a road win,? forward Georges Niang said. ?It worked. It feels good to get back on track.?

The Cyclones have glided smoothly at home and hope to extend their 21-game win streak at Hilton.

Only four teams are currently riding home winning streaks equal to or greater than that.

?I don?t want to say we feel invincible at home, because anybody can get beat,? guard Chris Babb said. ?But we definitely feel that extra sense of confidence.?

Governors press for alternative to impending spending cuts

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Less than a week before billions of dollars of U.S. spending cuts are set to begin, governors meeting in Washington ratcheted up the pressure on Congress and President Barack Obama to find an alternative to the reductions and give states more say in bringing down the federal debt.

"I certainly join the chorus of voices that are calling for that administration and members of Congress to come together and find more responsible cuts," said Indiana Governor Mike Pence, a Republican who served in the House of Representatives during the 2011 negotiations that led to the cuts.

Congress is expected to return to work on Monday to try to forge an agreement on avoiding the cuts, which are known as sequester or sequestration and are intended to save $1.2 trillion over 10 years. At the end of 2012, lawmakers decided to push the sequester's start date back to March 1 from January 1.

Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie, a Democrat who served in the House of Representatives for nearly 20 years, anticipates they will decide again to delay the start of the process.

"I think there will be a push-off," he said on Saturday. "But what will happen is some deep breaths will be taken, some real soul-searching will take place about what the political implications are going to be if this happens again and again. And I think a more long-term resolution ... will take place."

Republican and Democratic governors agree the federal government must shrink the deficit. They have already met with the White House and lawmakers in the first two months of 2013 to discuss sequestration alternatives.

In those meetings "We said, look we all know we've got to suffer a little bit together to get this ship righted," said Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe, a Democrat. "We're willing to take our share, but we don't want to take more than our share."

They are asking that any plan addressing the deficit should also help states save money, give them flexibility in deciding which areas to cut in their states, and not shift costs onto their budgets, said Governor Mary Fallin, a Republican from Oklahoma.

Sequestration was designed as a threat by Congress, which set itself a deadline in the fall of 2011 to agree on spending reductions. Because it missed the deadline, a scheme of automatic cuts decided by formula kicked in.

"We should all remember that sequestration was originally designed by Congress as something so odious, so repellant that it would force both sides into a compromise," said Governor John Hickenlooper of Colorado, a Democrat. "There can be no question that this is something nobody wants."

'DOUBLE WHAMMY'

During and after the 2007-09 recession, states' revenues plummeted to lows not seen in decades, while newly jobless and homeless residents turned to the their governments for help. Only in the last year have their revenues returned to pre-recession levels and spending demands eased. Many governors see sequestration as a threat to their slowly improving economies.

The two main sources of federal money for states - Medicaid, the healthcare program states run with federal reimbursements, and highway funding - are exempt from sequestration.

The remaining programs that are subject to sequestration directly provide on average 6.6 percent of states' revenues, according to Pew Center on the States. In South Dakota, they provide 10.3 percent.

The federal government, by employing people and buying goods and services, also plays an indirect role in states' economic fortunes.

On average, federal spending on procurement, salaries and wages within a state represents 5.3 percent of its gross domestic product, according to Pew. For Virginia, Washington, D.C. and Maryland, federal spending has the most economic impact, making up 19.7 percent of their GDP.

For federal defense spending, the average is 3.5 percent of state GDP, with Hawaii having the highest at 14.6 percent.

An analysis by Wells Fargo Securities Economics Group last week found that under sequestration states close to the nation's capital and in the South "will be the hardest hit, while states in the Midwest and the West Coast will likely be impacted to a lesser extent."

Governor Peter Shumlin, of Vermont, who also heads the Democratic Governors Association, called the reduced direct funds and potentially harmful economic effects a "double whammy."

"I have no idea what they're going to do down here," he said about Congress reaching an agreement. "All I can tell you is that the President ... seems quite convinced they're actually willing to push the button and undermine the economic recovery and prosperity that we're seeing in our states."

Democratic and Republican governors alike say statehouses and businesses have been left with too much uncertainty as the country approaches sequestration. Federal agencies are only now disclosing where they will cut spending and reduce work forces.

Fallin has pushed since the summer for an alternative and also does not want sequestration repeatedly postponed.

"Do the least harm and give us the flexibility," she said. "It is not good to have the sequester talk every couple of months."

Liberal Watchdog Group: 'Fix The Debt' Movement More Astroturf Than Grassroots

The liberal watchdog group Center for Media and Democracy says Fix the Debt ? a key unit in philanthropist Pete Peterson's corps of organizations to battle the national debt ? is a pro-business effort masquerading as a grassroots movement.

In a conference call with reporters Friday, CMD director Lisa Graves called Fix the Debt "an Astroturf supergroup that is exceedingly well funded." The term "Astroturf" refers to groups that appear to be citizen-organized but actually have their roots at consultants' offices inside the Capital Beltway.

A spokesman for Fix the Debt hotly denies the charge. Jon Romano said the center got some of its facts wrong, adding, "It is unfortunate that some would rather cast aspersions and misrepresent this view than engage in a constructive conversation about tackling this very real problem. Demagoguing does nothing to protect the most vulnerable."

Fix the Debt is promoting a citizens' petition, with 346,000 names. CMD, which last year used leaked documents to report on the secretive American Legislative Exchange Council, traced the corporate ties and lobbying records of Fix the Debt leaders.

Among the co-founders, co-chairs and steering committee ? 13 people in all ? it found six who sit on corporate boards, including GE, JPMorgan Chase and Morgan Stanley; advisers to Goldman Sachs and the private equity firm KKR; and lobbyists for KKR, the Private Equity Growth Capital Council and U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Fix the Debt also has two well-populated advisory groups: a CEO council with about 90 members, and a Business Leaders Council of about 40.

"They really are posturing as a grassroots movement," says Graves. "They are putting forward this notion of these business leaders not as job creators, but as problem solvers on the economy ? when in fact the record shows that a lot of these companies are actively lobbying to keep tax loopholes open" and to promote other corporation-friendly policies.

CMD's analysis also appears in The Nation, in a package of stories on Peterson's long-running effort to move the national debt to the top of Washington's agenda.

Major methane release is almost inevitable

We are on the cusp of a tipping point in the climate. If the global climate warms another few tenths of a degree, a large expanse of the Siberian permafrost will start to melt uncontrollably. The result: a significant amount of extra greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere, and a threat ? ironically ? to the infrastructure that carries natural gas from Russia to Europe.

The Arctic is warming faster than the rest of the planet, and climatologists have long warned that this will cause positive feedbacks that will speed up climate change further. The region is home to enormous stores of organic carbon, mostly in the form of permafrost soils and icy clathrates that trap methane ? a powerful greenhouse gas that could escape into the atmosphere.

The Siberian permafrost is a particular danger. A large region called the Yedoma could undergo runaway decomposition once it starts to melt, because microbes in the soil would eat the carbon and produce heat, melting more soil and releasing ever more greenhouse gases. In short, the melting of Yedoma is a tipping point: once it starts, there may be no stopping it.

For the first time, we have an indication of when this could start happening. Anton Vaks of the University of Oxford in the UK and colleagues have reconstructed the history of the Siberian permafrost going back 500,000 years. We already know how global temperatures have risen and fallen as ice sheets have advanced and retreated, so Vaks's team's record of changing permafrost gives an indication of how sensitive it is to changing temperatures.

    Stalagmite record

But there is no direct record of how the permafrost has changed, so Vaks had to find an indirect method. His team visited six caves that run along a south-north line, with the two southernmost ones being under the Gobi desert. Further north, three caves sit beneath a landscape of sporadic patches of permafrost, and the northernmost cave is right at the edge of Siberia's continuous permafrost zone.

The team focused on the 500,000-year history of stalagmites and similar rock formations in the caves. "Stalagmites only grow when water flows into caves," Vaks says. "It cannot happen when the soil is frozen." The team used radiometric dating to determine how old the stalagmites were. By building up a record of when they grew, Vaks could figure out when the ground above the caves was frozen and when it wasn't.

As expected, in most of the caves, stalagmites formed during every warm interglacial period as the patchy permafrost melted overhead.

But it took a particularly warm interglacial, from 424,000 and 374,000 years ago, for the stalagmites in the northernmost cave to grow ? suggesting the continuous permafrost overhead melted just once in the last 500,000 years.

At the time, global temperatures were 1.5??C warmer than they have been in the last 10,000 years. In other words, today's permafrost is likely to become vulnerable when we hit 1.5??C of global warming, says Vaks.

"Up until this point, we didn't have direct evidence of how this happened in past warming periods," says Ted Schuur of the University of Florida in Gainesville.

It will be very hard to stop the permafrost degrading as a warming of 1.5??C is not far off. Between 1850 and 2005, global temperatures rose 0.8??C, according to the 2007 report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Even if humanity stopped emitting greenhouse gases tomorrow, temperatures would rise another 0.2??C over the next 20 years. That would leave a window of 0.5??C ? but in fact our emissions are increasing. What's more, new fossil fuel power stations commit us to several decades of emissions.

    Soggy permafrost

What are the consequences? The greatest concern, says Tim Lenton of the University of Exeter in the UK, is the regional landscape. Buildings and infrastructure are often built on hard permafrost, and will start subsiding. "Ice roads won't exist any more."

The increasingly soggy permafrost will also threaten the pipelines that transport Russian gas to Europe. "The maintenance and upkeep of that infrastructure is going to cost a lot more," says Schuur.

As for the methane that could be released into the atmosphere, Schuur estimates that emissions will be equivalent to between 160 and 290 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide.

That sounds like a lot, but is little compared to the vast amount humans are likely to emit, says Lenton. "The signal's going to be swamped by fossil fuel [emissions]."

He says the dangers of the permafrost greenhouse gases have been overhyped, particularly as much of the methane will be converted to carbon dioxide by microbes in the soil, leading to a slower warming effect.

Schuur agrees with Lenton that the methane emissions are "not a runaway effect but an additional source that is not accounted in current climate models".

Things to do and fear on Valentine's Day, according to our inbox

These items were all pulled straight from Valentine's Day PR pitches sent to NBC News Digital editors. The commentary that follows is, of course, our own.

    THINGS TO DO

    Bring the spa home

Spas and salons will be brimming with lovey-dovey couples this Valentine's Day, but you can skip the crowds and create a better experience at home. Gather your candles, towels and favorite CDs and prepare a steamy bath. Complete the experience with a couples massage.

Candles? Check. Towels? Check. CDs? Not since 2007 but I can fake that part. Now, about that "couples massage..." [MrFreeStuff.com]

Send free encrypted video and text messages

With Valentine?s Day around the corner, there are plenty of ways technology can help you declare your romance for your sweetheart. ... Now, your private moments, meant to be shared with that special someone, are safe and will stay away from social media networks, and anywhere else they don?t belong.

This wouldn't have anything to do with, uh, below-the-belt camera use, would it? Thanks, I'll be sure to pass on the tip to every pop star, politician or pro athlete I know. [ZipaClip]

Give the gift of 3-D-printable sculptures

If last year?s attempt at romance was a bomb, why not try something a little different this time? Flowers are boring and clich?, chocolate is what you give to your mom, and jewelry is a little impersonal (plus, you?ll never get her taste right). You know what?s really romantic though? ... Adorable and quirky 3-D printable sculptures.

I would never have thought of that! [The Creators Project]

    Gain love and not weight

Not just calorie counting here, but personal trainer, nutritionist and exercise physiologist, Franci Cohen will tell you how much exercise you need to do to burn off the Valentine?s Day treats.

So painful looking, I plan to avoid Valentine's Day treats altogether. Wow, Franci, you're a lifesaver! [Franci Cohen Fitness]

Embark on a smartphone scavenger hunt

Are your readers tired of flowers and candy and looking for something fun to do with their sweetie for Valentine?s Day? Why not send them on a fun scavenger hunt, around the house, neighborhood or city, using their Samsung Galaxy SIII or Note II smartphones and Samsung?s NFC- enabled programmable TecTiles?

    Sounds ... complicated. [Samsung TecTiles]

Spend Valentine's Day with the WorryWoos ...

Don't feed the WorryBug on Valentine's Day!

Plush monsters that characterize Loneliness, Insecurity, Innocence, Frustration, Worry and Confusion. Can you feel the love tonight? [WorryWoos]

    ...or with cybersecurity lawyers

Have plans for a Valentine?s Day lunch? You might feel more secure spending it with law firm BakerHostetler and leading investigations firm Kroll, which on Thursday are co-hosting a webinar to review President Obama?s newly issued Cybersecurity Executive Order. Let us know if you want to sit in ? and feel free to bring a "date."

"Uh, hi, honey? You know how you were talking about cybersecurity the other day? So, like, how's about ... nevermind." [BakerHostetler]

'Break Up' in a foreign language

With Valentines Day around the corner, I wanted to send you a light-hearted feature on how to 'Break Up' with your partner in a foreign language.

    HAHAHAHAHAHA ... I don't get it. [Babbel.com]

    THINGS TO FEAR

    Scammers

Miss America heads back to Atlantic City, NJ

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) ? Miss America, Atlantic City's prodigal pageant, is coming home, and the spectacle that became synonymous with the New Jersey seaside resort is being assured all is forgiven after a six-year fling in Las Vegas.

The pageant will be back where it started 93 years ago and where it was fixture until 2006, when organizers moved to Nevada in the hopes of attracting a younger TV audience.

"It was always my dream that this would return here," said Art McMaster, president and CEO of the Miss America organization. "Sadly, this organization went west for a while. That sadness is over. We are back to the city where the Miss America pageant began, where the Miss America pageant was raised, and where the Miss America pageant belongs."

Atlantic County Executive Dennis Levinson, who worked with Gov. Chris Christie's office to entice the pageant, said having Miss America anywhere but Atlantic City just felt wrong.

"Can anyone separate the Mummer's Parade from Philadelphia, or the Rose Bowl from Pasadena?" he asked. "Miss America is Atlantic City, and she's coming home."

New Jersey's lieutenant governor, Kim Guadagno, made the official announcement Thursday morning inside Boardwalk Hall, the historic arena in which the pageant will take place during yet-undetermined dates in September. She said Atlantic City and the pageant have a handshake agreement to move back here for at least three years, but said final details have yet to be ironed out.

One thing is for sure, though: the contestants will don elaborate footwear and participate in the traditional pre-pageant Boardwalk parade, in which spectators yell out "Show us your shoes!"

Guadagno said no taxpayer money was part of the incentives offered to lure the pageant back to New Jersey. Liza Cartmell, president of the Atlantic City Alliance, said her casino-funded group is among those providing financial incentives, but would not say how much it might contribute. She said individual casinos are contributing as well, and the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority could use some of the funds casinos are obligated to pay to it for Miss America-related purposes.

Guadagno and Cartmell said the return of the pageant is expected to generate at least $30 million in economic activity for Atlantic City and the surrounding region. But the psychological boost, and the free publicity of having the national broadcast set in Atlantic City, is priceless, they added. Cartmell said 6,000 to 7,000 people associated with the pageant will need hotel rooms, meals and other expenditures during their time in Atlantic City.

"We will be showcasing all the attractions we have in Atlantic City," Cartmell said. The pageant contestants "will be climbing the lighthouse, they'll go to Gardner's Basin, they may go dolphin-watching ? all the fun things people do when they come to Atlantic City. The amount of free media for us is great."

The Miss America pageant left Atlantic City in 2006 after deciding it was just too expensive to stage its production there. It went to Las Vegas, where the current Miss America, Mallory Hagan, was crowned last month at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. Hagan will have her reign cut short when the pageant is broadcast in September, but will be paid for the full year, pageant officials said.

The move to Las Vegas came amid sliding TV ratings for the pageant, as it tried to interest a younger demographic and incorporating elements of reality television programming.

McMaster said the content of the show is still being worked on, adding he expects a mixture of modern television elements and traditional pageant staples such as evening wear and swimsuit competitions, and talent competitions. The format is being jointly developed with the ABC television network, which will broadcast the pageant for the next three years, he said.

The Miss America pageant started as little more than a bathing suit revue. It broke viewership records in its heyday and bills itself as one of the world's largest scholarship programs for women. But, like other pageants, it has struggled to stay relevant as national attitudes regarding women's rights have changed.

The contest originated in 1920 as the Fall Frolic, which became the Inter-City Beauty Contest the following year. In 1921, a high school junior named Margaret Gorman was one of approximately 1,000 entrants in a photo contest held by the Washington Herald. She was chosen as the first Miss Washington, D.C., and her prize was a trip to Atlantic City, where she won the top prize: the Golden Mermaid Trophy.

The next year, Gorman was expected to defend her title. But when the Washington Herald selected a new Miss Washington, D.C., Atlantic City pageant officials didn't know what new title to award Gorman. Since both titles she won in 1921 ? Inter-City Beauty, Amateur and The Most Beautiful Bathing Girl in America ? were considered somewhat awkward, it was decided to call her Miss America.

The pageant was conceived by the Businessmen's League of Atlantic City as a way to extend the summer tourism season in Atlantic City for another week, being held the weekend after Labor Day weekend, when temperatures were generally still warm.

Church Kidnapping Hoax: Man Admits He Lied About Abduction

    Posted: February 12, 2013

A North Carolina man who said he was abducted by church members and abused for being gay has admitted the kidnapping story was a hoax.

In addition fabricating the abduction, 22-year-old Michael Lowry also said he lied about being gay. According to The Associated Press, he has since apologized to the Word of Faith Fellowship Church for making up the story.

Rutherfordton County Sheriff?s Detective Sergeant Jamie Keever said Lowry could face several charges for filing a false report. Authorities are still investigating the church kidnapping hoax.

The Huffington Post explains that Lowry?s tale included kidnapping, abuse, and torture at the hands of church members. He said he was knocked unconscious during the first day of confinment. Lowry explained that his captors believed demons were the cause of his homosexuality.

    He said of his experience:

?The pastor said to find out what my darkest secret was, and I was like, ?I?m never telling.? They hit my head with fists and I was on the floor, they held my hands and feet down and were pushing on my chest, and I could barely breathe.?

Founder Jane Whaley had maintained the church did not abduct Lowry or subject him to any form of abuse or torture. She added that church members discovered he was gay after watching a local news report about Lowry?s accusations.

The Inquisitr previously reported that the World of Faith Fellowship Church has been the center of controversy in the past. Whaley was convicted of abuse after allegations were made against the church. However, the ruling was later overturned.

Rutherfordton County Sheriff?s office is still looking into why Michael Lowry accused the church of kidnapping and why he lied about being gay. The district attorney has submitted the case to the grand jury to see if charges should be filed against Lowry.

Tunisia Islamist leader says unity gov't imminent

TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) ? An agreement is imminent on a new national unity government for Tunisia to resolve the simmering political crisis brought on by the assassination of an opposition politician, the leader of the powerful Islamist party told The Associated Press Monday.

Rachid Ghannouchi, leader of the moderate Islamist Ennahda party, said a new government is expected to be announced in two or three days, as the country that kicked off the 2011 pro-democracy uprisings of the Arab Spring teeters on the edge of a political crisis.

"We are on the road to an understanding," he said. "We are moving toward forming a government of national union."

Last week's assassination of leftist lawyer Chokri Belaid resulted in days of rioting after many people held the government responsible for his death, at a time when negotiations to widen the governing coalition were deadlocked. The assassination was the culmination of weeks of rising political violence in which many opposition parties had been attacked by thugs.

Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali, also of Ennahda, proposed a government of technocrats to lead the country and resolve the crisis, in tacit acknowledgement that the coalition of Ennahda and two secular parties had not succeeded in tackling the country's economic woes or the rising violence, including that by hardline Muslims known as Salafis.

Jebali's move was hailed by the opposition, but rejected by his own party, and Ghannouchi's latest statement suggests Ennahda has come up with an alternative of its own that would keep it in control of key ministries, such as interior, foreign affairs and justice.

"A government of technocrats has no future because the political parties have rejected this initiative," said Ghannouchi. "For this reason, Jebali has returned to the parties to form a consensus government."

Jebali's office could not confirm Ghannouchi's assertion that the technocrat option had been abandoned. The prime minister had earlier stated that if his new apolitical government was not accepted by the general assembly, he would resign.

After announcing it had quit the government yesterday, secular coalition member Congress for the Republic said it would wait a week before leaving. One of its conditions for remaining has been a change in the ministers of justice and foreign affairs.

In the interview, Ghannouchi hinted that perhaps the party might relinquish some ministries.

After Tunisians overthrew their long-ruling dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali on Jan. 14, 2011, they held their first free elections and handed Ennahda a plurality of seats in a new assembly tasked with writing the constitution.

The constitution was meant to be completed by now and new elections set for a permanent legislature, but the parties have become deadlocked amid increasing dissatisfaction with Ennahda.

Jebali said a nonpartisan government was the only way to resolve the crisis, finish the constitution and set up new elections, but observers say many in Ennahda fear losing power.

The funeral of Belaid, whose left-wing Popular Front coalition of parties had few seats in the assembly, saw a massive outpouring of support that was widely interpreted as a sign of growing popular dislike for the Islamists.

"We have condemned and we still condemn this crime, which is a crime against humanity, against our revolution, our national unity," asserted Ghannouchi. "It constitutes a real danger for stability."

There has been no information about who might be behind the attack, which Ghannouchi only vaguely ascribed to "counterrevolutionary forces inside and outside the country."

Ghannouchi, who returned to Tunisia after the fall of Ben Ali after almost a quarter-century of exile, said that after their peaceful revolution, Tunisians are seeking a modern, democratic state that could be a model for the region.

"There is no doubt we are for a civil state and not a religious government that rules in the name of God. The only legitimacy we accept is the one from the ballot boxes and popular will," he said, adding that he is seeking a constitution that defends human rights and guarantees equality between the sexes.

Controversial Texas startup fund proves its value

The embattled Texas Emerging Technology Fund came under the spotlight Monday at the first meeting of the House Committee on Technology. It?s one of several stops fund managers will make in the coming months as lawmakers decide how much money will go into the program this year.

A few weeks ago, the ETF caught flack due to a report that concluded employment at ETF-funded companies is down in the past year. Some lawmakers already want to drastically cut back on what once was a $200 million investment fund.

But the ETF received a lot of praise at the committee meeting Monday. The majority of the 140 companies invested in by the ETF since it began in 2005 are still around, said Patrick Boswell, ETF?s interim director. Three companies have ceased operations, four are in bankruptcy proceedings and six are involved in litigation, he told lawmakers.

Plus, he said, the fund has managed to turn a profit for the state. After investing $184 million, Boswell said, current asset capital is valued at $186 million and $5 million has already cashed in by the state.

Each investment the ETF makes carries risk due to its focus on funding early-stage technology startups, said State Rep. Angie Chen Button, R-Richardson, committee vice chairwoman. But these sorts of companies are ?the future? and need to be leveraged to help Texas remain a technology state.

Previous criticism of the ETF highlighted a lack of transparency. Since a 2011 state auditor?s report, the ETF has done a good job of implementing recommendations to become more transparent, Boswell said.

The ETF has also attracted criticism due to investing in companies that failed. Two company CEOs appeared before the committee and explained how ETF investments enabled their companies to grow, generate jobs and succeed.

Snow Job: How Hollywood Fakes Winter on Film

Charlie Chaplin's groundbreaking silent film comedy found inspiration in the historical Klondike Gold Rush, and led the auteur to drag the production's cast and crew to snowy, rustic Trukee, Nevada to serve as the scenic Chilkoot Pass in Alaska. For the film's opening sequence, 600 extras from Sacramento were brought in by train to reenact the dangerous Yukon trek. The Trukee Ski Club helped clear a 2300-foot single file path near Donner Summit, and what is now the Sugar Bowl Ski Resort. The film was spectacular, but at a price. Many of the cast and crew became sick during shooting because of the harsh conditions.

Reprising his role as The Little Tramp, Chaplin found his comic pratfalls difficult to control in the frigid conditions, and after coming down with the flu, he finally agreed to return to Hollywood. Once back in the studio, work began on the creation of a miniature mountain range, constructed from timber (reportedly a quarter-of-a-million feet), chicken wire, and burlap. Salt and flour were used in lieu of snow, and the resulting snowscape was surprisingly convincing on film. To film the Miner's hut teetering on the edge of the cliff, studio technicians created a miniature model and filmed the scene so smoothly that the cut from the full-size set to the model is hard to detect.

    Snowflakes are shape-shifters

    Kenneth Libbrecht / Caltech

Kenneth Libbrecht, professor of physics at California Institute of Technology, photographs snowflakes in the field and in his lab. Studio-type lighting, even outdoors, brings out angles, texture and color that are otherwise hard to spot.

    By Tia Ghose, LiveScience

Winter snowstorms, like the Nor'easter that just slammed New England, transform gray days into winter wonderlands.

So while you're stuck inside, or within snowshoe-walking distance, here are six fun facts about snow, from the idea that no two snowflakes are alike to the bizarre megadunes that blanket Antarctica.

    Unique beauty
According to physicists, it's actually true that no two snowflakes are alike ? well, at least when it comes to complex snowflakes.

Snowflakes form when water droplets in the clouds freeze to form a six-sided crystal structure. As the temperature cools, more water vapor freezes and grows in branches from the six sides of the seed crystal. As the crystals form, they are randomly tossed about inside the clouds, which vary in temperature.

The temperature greatly affects how the snowflake forms, so while the simplest hexagonal crystals may look alike, more complicated beauties each have their own unique shapes. [See Stunning Photos of Snowflakes]

    White triangles
Most snowflakes form dazzling crystal patterns with six sides. But occasionally, a triangular crystal forms, something that has puzzled physicists for years. A 2009 study in the open-access, pre-publish journal arXiv.org revealed that triangular snowflakes form when the six sides of the seed crystals are slightly asymmetric. This makes them wobble randomly as a snowflake falls, allowing the bigger sides to hit the fast-flowing air inside the cloud, and grow at the expense of the smaller sides.

Other snowflakes have even stranger shapes: Some look like hourglasses, others like spools of thread and still others like needles. And while the quintessential snowflake is the six-armed, symmetrical beauty, most versions are hardly so picturesque. In fact, since the arms of a snowflake all grow randomly, asymmetrical snowflakes are more common.

    Snowy shapes
The types of snowflakes that form depend a lot on the temperature and moisture in the clouds, according to a 2005 review in the journal Reports on Progress in Physics. Right around freezing temperatures, hexagonal plates (the cross-section is a two-dimensional hexagon) and the iconic, six-sided snowflake (known as a dendrite) form.

As the temperature cools, snowflakes develop into needles, then hexagonal prisms and even hollow columns. Go colder still, and dendrites form at much larger sizes. And at truly frigid temperatures, the frigid air forms prisms and flat plates.

This photo of penitentes, ice formations formed in high-altitude regions, was taken in December 2005 along the Chajnantor plain in Chile.

    Piles and piles
Because snow is so fluffy (meaning it's chock full of air), a relatively small amount of water can translate into a huge pile of snow. An inch of rain on average makes about 10 inches of snow. The biggest snowfalls on record are hard to compare, but the Great Snow of 1717 dropped about 3 to 4 feet (0.9 to 1.2 meters) on Boston inhabitants, with some drifts reaching 25 feet (7.6-m), according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center.

In 1959, a snowstorm in Mt. Shasta dropped as much as 15.75 feet (4.8 meters) on inhabitants of the California region, according to the College of the Siskiyous. In the 1998 to 1999 snow season, about 95 feet (28.9 m) of snow fell on Mt. Baker, Wash.

    Graupel and hoar Frost?
An old saying claims the Eskimos have dozens of different words for describing snow. While that turned out to be a myth, there are many types of snow crystals and even more snow formations. Aside from the snowflake, there's also hoar frost and graupel, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center.

Hoar frost forms on surfaces that are colder than the frost point in the air around them, so water goes straight from vapor to solid. This spiky, fluffy snow tends to form on tree branches, telephone wires and other skinny items exposed to the chilly air. Graupel, which consists of hard ice pellets, forms when snowflakes fall through a cloud that contains supercooled water droplets. The droplets freeze onto the snowflakes and form misshapen, lumpy balls.

    Snow landscape
While the snow on the driveway may just be a pile, the fluffy white stuff creates beautiful formations in nature. Lovers of winter sports know to be wary of cornices, overhanging snow that juts from the edge of a cliff.

And in Antarctica, giant snow formations known as megadunes form from monstrous snow crystals that are up to 0.75 inches (2 cm) across, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center. (There can be several?snow crystals in a single snowflake.) In arid locales like Death Valley, Calif., piles of snow can be transformed into penitents: bizarre, spiky formations that look like the stalagmites that form in caves.
