Why small businesses should scrap strategic planning

Most of what we learn in business schools and textbooks is written for large companies. We make the erroneous assumption that since every small company wants to grow but it doesn?t.

What fast-growing companies need is strategic thinking, not strategic planning, the practice of hitting every challenge and opportunity strategically.

Three things you can do to turn your size into an advantage?

US clears China, Singapore from Iran oil sanctions

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Obama administration on Thursday cleared China and Singapore from possible U.S. economic penalties, citing their sharp cuts in imports of Iranian oil, as an American deadline arrived for banks to stop processing petroleum transactions with Tehran.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton commended the two Asian countries for "significantly" reducing the oil purchases and she announced a six-month exception for them to continue buying Iranian crude at lower levels. Eighteen other governments have received similar waivers.

The U.S. penalties are intended to pressure Iran to prove it is not trying to develop nuclear weapons.

Iran's oil exports are down about 40 percent, while its currency has fallen sharply. European penalties coming into effect next week will further raise the economic pressure.

The Islamic republic insists its nuclear program is designed solely for peaceful energy and research purposes. The United States and many other countries are unconvinced. A breakthrough has proved elusive in three rounds of negotiations since April involving Iran and the leading world powers.

Technical talks resume in Turkey next week, but looming over the entire process is a possible military response from the U.S. or Israel if a compromise isn't reached soon. In the meantime, Washington and its partners are targeting the oil sector to dry up a main source of revenue for the Iranian government.

"A total of 20 world economies have now qualified for such an exception," Clinton said in a statement. "Their cumulative actions are a clear demonstration to Iran's government that Iran's continued violation of its international nuclear obligations carries an enormous economic cost."

She said Iranian crude exports have dropped to 1.5 million barrels a day, from 2.5 million barrels last year, which comes out to almost $32 billion in revenue lost over a whole year. With the European Union deciding to cut off any oil imports as of Sunday, "Iran's leaders will understand even more fully the urgency of the choice they face and the unity of the international community," Clinton said.

Thursday's action now makes all of Iran's biggest oil purchasers free from the threat of seeing their banks cut off from the American financial system. The waiver is good for 180 days and is renewable. Belgium, Britain, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, India, Malaysia, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Turkey had been exempted.

Speaking earlier Thursday in Latvia, Clinton told reporters that China and Singapore share America's goal of preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon and understood the need for sanctions. U.S. officials say China has cut its imports from Iran by one-quarter since January. Singapore has pledged to cease purchasing Iranian oil altogether.

Sen. Robert Menendez, who co-wrote the Iran sanctions law, said the waivers showed the "tremendous effectiveness" of the U.S. restrictions on dealing with Iran's Central Bank. Menendez, D-N.J., called on China to make further reductions in imports over the coming months.

But the Republican who leads the House Foreign Affairs Committee said the administration was giving Beijing a "free pass."

"The administration likes to pat itself on the back for supposedly being strong on Iran sanctions," said Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla. "But actions speak louder than words, and today the administration has granted a free pass to Iran's biggest enabler, China, which purchases more Iranian crude than any other country."

The administration, however, offered no waiver to Pakistan and some other Asian countries that buy oil from Iran. Under the law, their banks are now subject to U.S. penalties if they are caught facilitating substantial purchases of Iranian petroleum.

UNESCO Makes Nativity Church A World Heritage Endangered Site, Israel, US Abstain

PARIS ? UNESCO's World Heritage committee on Friday approved a Palestinian bid to place the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem on its list of sites of World Heritage in Danger ? a move seen by some nations as dangerously mixing politics and culture.

Palestinian spokeswoman Hanan Ashrawi said the vote was an affirmation of Palestinian sovereignty over the site that marks the place where Christians believe Jesus was born.

Israel angrily denounced the vote, with Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Ilana Stein saying the decision "has turned UNESCO into a theater of the absurd."

"This is a sad day for the World Heritage Committee," she said.

The 21-member committee, meeting in St. Petersburg, Russia, voted 13-6 to include the church and pilgrimage route, located in the Israeli-controlled West Bank, on its list of sites. There were two abstentions.

The drive to get the Nativity church quickly recognized as a World Heritage site was part of the Palestinians' bid to win international recognition since attempts to establish a Palestinian state through negotiations with Israel are frozen.

The United States was among nations opposed to the Palestinian proposal of an emergency candidacy for the iconic Christian site, shortcutting what is usually an 18-month-long process to apply for World Heritage recognition. Neither the United States nor Israel was on the committee. The U.S. ambassador to UNESCO, David Killion, said the United States is "profoundly disappointed."

The church ? which drew some 2 million visitors last year and parts of which are 1,500 years old ? stands above the grotto that Christians believe was the birthplace of Jesus. The Palestinian application asks for recognition as a site of "outstanding universal value" urgently in need of attention.

The application cited lack of regular restoration of the church due to the political situation since 1967 when Israel occupied the territories, and difficulties procuring equipment because of lack of free movement imposed by Israeli forces.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization voted to admit Palestine as a full member in October. The emergency candidacy for the church clearly showed the Palestinians' intention of making the most of their position, after a failure to join the main U.N. body because Palestine is not a recognized state.

The Palestinian application to place the Church on the list showed that they plan to put forward other sites for prestigious World Heritage recognition, eventually linking various landmarks to the life of Jesus.

"The message to Israel today is that unilateral actions will not work and that Israel cannot continue challenging the world despite its powerful allies," Ashrawi said.

Killion, the U.S. ambassador, said "this body should not be politicized." His statement noted the candidacy was opposed by a UNESCO experts committee, whose conclusions are almost always heeded.

The three churches acting as custodians of the site had also been opposed. The Greek Orthodox, Armenian and Roman Catholic churches keep the site under a so-called Status Quo agreement dating to the Ottoman empire, and fear the Palestinian action will upset that delicate balance.

"The site clearly has tremendous religious and historical significance," Killion's statement said. "However, the emergency procedure used in this instance is reserved only for extreme cases."

Stein, the Israeli Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, said those who voted in favor of the Nativity candidacy "have given themselves up as pawns in the service of the Palestinians at the expense of UNESCO's professionalism and good name."

While the church needs restoration, including repair of a leaky roof, it was not seen by the experts committee as being in imminent threat of destruction ? the criteria usually reserved for the emergency procedure.

A site nominated by Israel depicting human evolution at Mount Carmel, the Nahal Me'arot/Wadi el-Mughara Caves, also was inscribed on the World Heritage list. That nomination, like all others under consideration in St. Petersburg, went through regular channels ? not the emergency route.

Report: Ex-British minister sold secrets to Czechs

(AP) ? The British government said Thursday it would investigate claims an ex-minister sold information to communist spies for a decade during the Cold War in clandestine meetings in cocktail lounges and swank restaurants.

The BBC reported that files in the archive of the Czech Security Service show that Raymond Mawby, an ex-Conservative Party lawmaker who briefly served as a junior minister in the mid-1960s, provided intelligence to spies working for Czechoslovakia ? then a communist state ? for a decade from around 1961 to 1971.

According to the files, Mawby offered information on his colleagues and even provided a sketch of the layout of the prime minister's office at No. 10 Downing Street.

"Mawby has also promised to carry out tasks such as asking questions in Parliament according to our needs," the BBC reported his handler as writing.

George Young, leader of the House of Commons, told legislators that the government would make "appropriate inquiries to see how we might get the full picture in the public domain."

Young, who said he had known Mawby, insisted that "only one side of the story" had been put forward.

According to the BBC report Thursday, the files claim Mawby was first approached at an embassy cocktail party, and later met with Czech intelligence officials in upscale London venues. He had been targeted as a result of his fondness for gambling, with the Czechs correctly assuming he would accept their offer of payments in return for information.

Mawby did not have access to prized intelligence or secret papers. He left the House of Commons in 1983 and died in 1990.

Britain's most famous lawmaker spy was Labour Party legislator John Stonehouse, a former communications minister who also acted as an informant to the Czechs through the 1960s. Papers released in 2010 by the National Archives show that, after he had been exposed, Britain's government covered up his activities as there was too little evidence to put him on trial.

Stonehouse faked his own suicide in 1974, leaving a bundle of his clothes on a beach in Miami. He was discovered less than a month later hiding out in Melbourne, Australia.

Adam Levine Calls Christina Aguilera Feud Rumors 'BS'

'We bickered a little bit in the beginning. ... But I love her,' Levine says of his fellow 'Voice' judge.
By James Montgomery

Adam Levine at "MTV First: Maroon 5"
Photo:

Last month, just as "The Voice" was wrapping its second season, reports began to circulate about a growing feud between judges Christina Aguilera and Adam Levine, one that supposedly involved plenty of behind-the-scenes bitching, more than a few temper tantrums and (quite possibly) one very public use of the c-word.

Of course, given that the show was heading toward its finale, one could reasonably assume some of that drama may have been cooked up to draw in viewers, though there were on-air moments where the tension between Aguilera and Levine seemed very real indeed. So, when Levine and his Maroon 5 mate James Valentine sat down with MTV News to premiere their brand-new "One More Night" video, we had to ask him about the feud. And while Levine didn't deny on-set friction, he let it be known that things have truly been blown out of proportion.

"We bickered a little bit in the beginning, to be totally truthful, we had a little bit of a rough start, just kind of all getting to know each other," he said. "But I love her, she's the best, and we're having a fantastic time as of late on the set. She's great, and all of that is sensationalized media BS ... so don't worry about any of that."

And while Levine made it clear that he'd much rather be discussing Maroon 5's just-released Overexposed album, he understands that rumors like this are all part of living life beneath the glare of the spotlight. And he's not exactly losing any sleep over that fact.

"It affects you as much as you let it. I mean, I know the deal, so as long as I do, it doesn't matter what people say," he explained. "Think about if we listened to what people say all the time, imagine how crazy it would make you."

Africa's savannas may become forests by 2100, study suggests

ScienceDaily (June 28, 2012) ? A new study published today in Nature by authors from the Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre and the Goethe University Frankfurt suggests that large parts of Africa?s savannas may well be forests by 2100. The study suggests that fertilization by atmospheric carbon dioxide is forcing increases in tree cover throughout Africa. A switch from savanna to forest occurs once a critical threshold of CO2 concentration is exceeded, yet each site has its own critical threshold. The implication is that each savanna will switch at different points in time, thereby reducing the risk that a synchronous shock to the earth system will emanate from savannas.

Tropical grasslands, savannas and forests, areas the authors call the savanna complex, are expected to respond sensitively to climate and atmospheric changes. This is because the main players, grasses and trees, differ fundamentally in their response to temperature, carbon dioxide supply and fire and are in an unrelenting struggle for the dominance of the savanna complex. The outcome of this struggle determines whether vast portions of the globe?s tropical and sub-tropical regions are covered with grasslands, savannas or forests.? In the past such shifts in dominance have played out in slow motion, but the current wave of atmospheric changes has accelerated the potential rate of change.?

Experimental studies have generally shown that plants do not show a large response to CO2 fertilization. ??However, most of these studies were conducted in northern ecosystems or on commercially important species? explains Steven Higgins, lead author of the study from the Biodiodversity and Climate Reseach Centre and Goethe-University. ?In fact, only one experimental study has investigated how savanna plants will respond to changing CO2 concentrations and this study showed that savanna trees were essentially CO2 starved under pre-industrial CO2 concentrations, and that their growth really starts taking off at the CO2 concentrations we are currently experiencing.?

The vegetation shifts that the Higgins and Scheiter study projects are an example of what some theorists call catastrophic regime shifts. Such catastrophic regime shifts can be triggered by small changes in the factors that regulate the system. These small changes set up a cascade of events that reinforce each other causing the system to change more and more rapidly. The study demonstrated that the savanna complex showed symptoms of catastrophic regime shifts. ??The potential for regime shifts in a vegetation formation that covers such vast areas is what is making earth system scientists turn their attention to savannas? comments Higgins.?

Knowing when such regime shifts will occur is critical for anticipating change. This study discovered that locations where the temperature rise associated with climate change occurs rapidly, for example in the center of southern Africa, are projected to switch later to forest as the high rate of temperature increase allows the savanna grasses to remain competitive for longer in the face of rising atmospheric CO2 concentration. This means that even though a single location may experience its catastrophic regime shift, the vegetation change when averaged over a region will be smoother. Such gradual transitions in regional vegetation patterns will reduce the potential for shocks to the earth system. ?While this may seem reassuring, we have to bear in mind that these changes are still rapid when viewed on geological time scales?, says Higgins.

The practical implications of the study are far reaching. For example, the study identified a belt that spans northern central Africa where fire suppression would encourage savannas to transition to forests. ?So if you wanted to sequester carbon as part of a carbon mitigation action, this is where you should do it? explained Higgins ?with the caveat that where this will work is shifting as atmospheric conditions change.? A worrying implication is that the grasslands and open savannas of Africa, areas with unique floras and faunas, are set to be replaced by closed savannas? or forests.? Hence it appears that atmospheric change represents a major threat to systems that are already threatened by over-grazing, plantation forestry and crop production.

White Sox bust out, beat Twins

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Chris Sale won again, pitching seven easy innings with support from a three-run homer by Adam Dunn, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Minnesota Twins 12-5 Wednesday.

The American League's leader in earned run average, Sale (9-2) struck out five and walked one with six hits and two runs allowed.

Dunn had three hits and four RBIs along with his 24th home run of the season, and newly-acquired Kevin Youkilis went 3 for 4 and drove in two runs. Alex Rios also had three hits and a homer, and the White Sox collected a season-high 21 hits.

Nick Blackburn (4-5) watched his ERA balloon to 7.74 after five rough innings for the Twins. He gave up nine hits and six runs.

White Sox manager Robin Ventura gave regulars Paul Konerko, Gordon Beckham and Dayan Viciedo a rest, but an offense that managed only 13 runs over the previous five games finally had a breakout game. Dunn ended a 0-for-24 skid with his homer, and the White Sox posted a double-digit score for the first time in 16 games. Sale pitched that one, too, on June 9 against Houston.

First baseman Justin Morneau, now 7 for 73 against left-handers this season with 22 strikeouts, talked his way into the lineup by telling manager Ron Gardenhire before the game he wanted "a piece of this kid," but a seventh-inning single was the only dent he put on yet another stellar performance by the lefty Sale.

Brian Dozier homered and Ben Revere tacked on a sacrifice fly, but that was the only damage done against the 23-year-old 2010 first-round draft pick. In seven starts on the road this season, Sale is 5-0 with a 2.91 ERA and 54 strikeouts in 46 1-3 innings.

Blackburn was actually 4-0 over his previous six starts, two before he strained his left quadriceps muscle and four after, but he hadn't been that effective. In 12 turns this season, he has only one quality appearance of six innings or more and three runs or fewer.

The right-hander escaped the first inning without a run for just the fourth time in 2012, but Alex Rios doubled and scored in the second. Youkilis drove in a run with a double in the third, and Dunn broke the game open and snapped out of his slump with one big swing in the fifth.

With two on and two out, Dunn sent a 1-1 pitch by Blackburn to the opposite field that bounced off the facade between the first and second decks. Then Rios hit one to the same area in left to stretch the lead to 6-0.

The Twins have allowed 100 home runs this year, including 73 by their starters. Both totals are the most in the majors.

The Twins have played a lot better in June than they did the first two months of the season, but they haven't been able to climb out of last place or start any long winning streaks. This game felt more like one of their awful April performances.

Ryan Doumit wandered too far off second base during a pitch in the third inning that skipped away from catcher A.J. Pierzynski, who made the first of four throws to catch Doumit in a rundown. Denard Span hit his head on the center field wall trying to catch a triple by Pierzynski in the seventh. Then Morneau tried to move up on a pitch that sailed past Pierzynski in the seventh, but the ball bounced straight back and Pierzynski threw out his former teammate at second.

Damon Mastroianni hit his first career home run, a two-run shot against Will Ohman in the eighth inning, for the Twins.

NOTES: The Twins have lost eight of their last 10 games against the White Sox at home. ... The White Sox start a four-game series in New York on Thursday, with RHP Dylan Axelrod (0-1, 5.54 ERA) making his third start this season against Yankees RHP Ivan Nova (9-2, 4.25). ... The Twins are off on Thursday before four games in three days here against Kansas City. LHP Brian Duensing (1-3, 3.82) pitches on Friday, with RHP Luis Mendoza (2-4, 4.95) taking the mound for the Royals.

Alternative Health Information Blog: Is There An Alternative Health ...

Have you ever moved to a new area or wanted to scope out a new area, while on vacation or just wanted to know what's happening in your area, using the internet? If your interests are directed towards nightlife and boozing your way through life, you're sure to find what you're looking for, fast. Not that there's anything wrong with boozing but life has so much more to offer. At least I think so.

On the other hand if you're not well you can find an assortment of activities to help you learn all the drugs you can get with a prescription to free you of all that ails you in the bat of an eye. The "disclaimer removed" doesn't tell you all the consequences you're bound to experience after relieving your current challenge. Even the city, county, state and federal listing will steer you to these numerous events. It's a wonder that those promoting these events haven't realized most that really need to be at these event often have no transportation, duh!

So what if that is not part of your lifestyle habits and what if you are part of the group that, knows that there's so much more to life? What if you are one that has, as "Thoreau" once said in his poem, "choose the road less traveled".

I recently discovered that there are no search engines, directories or databases that make it easy for those who are looking for more in life, to find it.

After inviting, some health conscious friends to my town, I quickly discovered that finding anything close to what they'd like to do was not going to happen on the internet, at least fast. I grabbed a local health magazine to learn they had a sprinkling of events and most were multi-level marketing and product invitations. Now I know in my town there are thousands of practitioners and activities, but they're spread all over the place. In fact you would need to search for each activity separately, to get anywhere.

That's it, I said to myself. I did locate some happenings by word of mouth, and a few on Facebook, but after my friends left, I decided to do something about it. What I did is create an events listing, specific for the alternative health and lifestyle community with free listing just for my community. Well it's just for now. And that's right, I made it free. I did this because the cost to advertise can be high and the lead time is great on any publication that circulates 10,000 or more. But most of all if you want something you have to be it, at least that's what I see. So I'm holding space now for my community and those that hold events in the alternative health and lifestyle community in Central Florida.

If you're in this area, you'll now be able to advertise to a growing list of subscribers and these subscribers get this listing, spam-free, in their email boxes once a week.

Now there is at least, in my area, a listing that will allow one to find events that are directed towards those that know there is something more to life.

On tape, Sandusky's son Matt talks of sex abuse

The statement didn't detail the abuse allegation. (AP Photo/Gene J. Puskar, File)

(AP) ? Jerry Sandusky's son Matt recalled showering with his future adoptive father as a boy and pretending to be asleep to avoid being touched ? memories that surfaced only recently, according to a police interview that details what are the earliest allegations yet of abuse by the former Penn State assistant football coach.

Matt Sandusky, now 33, said the abuse started at age 8, a decade before he was adopted by the once-heralded defensive coordinator, according to the interview, first reported Tuesday by NBC News.

"If you were pretending you were asleep and you were touched or rubbed in some way, you could just act like you were rolling over in your sleep, so that you could change positions," Matt Sandusky said in an excerpt played Tuesday on NBC's "Today" show. His attorneys confirmed the recording's authenticity to The Associated Press.

Jerry Sandusky was convicted last week of 45 counts of abusing 10 boys he met through the charity he founded ? the same organization that introduced him to Matt Sandusky, who became his foster child. Jerry Sandusky's principal lawyer did not return messages Tuesday, and another lawyer said only that Matt Sandusky's allegations contradict testimony he gave to the grand jury whose charges put his father on trial.

Matt Sandusky did not reveal any abuse when he was initially questioned as a grand jury witness but did release a statement alleging past abuse as the jury was sequestered in deliberations last week.

The police interview tapes are the first time Matt Sandusky's allegations of sexual abuse have been publicly aired, and too much time has passed for criminal charges. Asked why he was now coming forward on abuse purported to have occurred as early as the late 1980s, Matt Sandusky told police there were several reasons ? but singled out his family.

"So that they can really have closure and see what the truth actually is. And just to right the wrong, honestly, of going to the grand jury and lying," he said in the police interview.

The AP does not identify people alleging sexual assault without their consent. Matt Sandusky's lawyers named him in a statement released Tuesday to reporters that acknowledged the tapes' validity.

"Although the tape was released without Matt's knowledge or permission, it illustrates that he made the difficult decision to come forward and tell the painful truth to investigators despite extraordinary pressure to support his father," lawyers Justine Andronici and Andrew Shubin wrote.

Jerry Sandusky hasn't been charged with abusing Matt, one of six children adopted by the former coach and his wife, Dottie. Messages left for Sandusky's other children were not returned.

Matt Sandusky sat with Dottie Sandusky on the first day of the trial but left after hearing one of the accusers testify. His attorneys have said he reached out to them while the trial was under way, saying he wanted to talk to prosecutors.

Matt Sandusky said that he was undergoing therapy and that his memories of abuse were only now surfacing. He said on the tapes that he tried to flee Sandusky's house and also attempted suicide.

"I know that I really wanted to die at that point in time," he said.

On the recording, Matt Sandusky says he was sexually abused off and on between ages 8 and 15. While being questioned, he said Jerry Sandusky would blow raspberries on his stomach and touch his genitals. The acts described were similar to accounts relayed by eight accusers who offered graphic testimony on the witness stand.

Those eight accusers said they met Sandusky through The Second Mile, the charity Jerry Sandusky founded for at-risk youth. Matt Sandusky also met his adoptive father through the charity.

Asked whether he recalled engaging in oral sex or being raped by the former Penn State coach, he told police "at this point I don't recall that."

Unless he recovers memory of rape or deviate sexual intercourse, it doesn't appear Jerry Sandusky could still be charged in connection with the allegations by his son.

State Attorney General Linda Kelly said Friday after the verdict that the investigation was continuing. Matt Sandusky's abuse allegations date as far back as the late 1980s, about a decade before the allegations on which Jerry Sandusky was tried.

If the abuse ended by 1995, Matt Sandusky's deadline for pressing criminal charges appears to have expired in 2003 for rape or involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, and in 2000 for lesser sexual abuse, according to sex-crimes prosecutors.

Until 2002, Pennsylvania law allowed accusers to report the most serious charges of sexual abuse until age 23 and lesser charges until age 20. The law was then changed to give accusers up to age 30 to come forward for rape or involuntary deviate sexual intercourse.

The law was extended again in 2007 to age 50 for all sexual abuse claims. But the changes are not retroactive ? meaning Matt Sandusky would not be able to press criminal charges at this point.

On the civil side, Matt Sandusky may have missed his window for seeking damages from Penn State or others.

In Pennsylvania, accusers must now file lawsuits by age 30 in most cases, though exceptions are theoretically possible in the event of concealment or fraud.

"On the face of it, he's too late ... unless there's an exception around it," said lawyer Jeff Anderson, who filed the first lawsuit against Penn State over other Sandusky allegations. His client is not part of the criminal case because he came forward after the charges were filed.

Jerry Sandusky, 68, is under observation at the Centre County jail, where he has been separated from other inmates pending a psychological review to help determine the next step toward his sentencing in about three months. He has steadfastly maintained his innocence.

The son was prepared to testify against his father, lawyers have said. Defense attorney Joe Amendola has said that prosecutors told the defense that if Jerry Sandusky took the stand, Matt Sandusky would have been called as a rebuttal witness.

Another defense attorney, Karl Rominger, told the AP he and Amendola heard the tape before deciding not to put Jerry Sandusky on the stand.

He said that Matt Sandusky, on the tape, makes "allegations that directly contradicts sworn testimony ... directly contradicts police statements he'd given previously, directly contradicts public statements and absolutely contradicts everything his family knows."

Sandusky's arrest in November triggered a scandal at Penn State that led to the ouster of Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno and the university's president.

The case has shone a national spotlight on the issue of sexual abuse against children. A spokeswoman for the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, which describes itself as the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization said Tuesday there has been a 33 percent increase since the trial in the number of people who contacted the group's National Sexual Assault Online Hotline.

God Loves Little Boys (3) - Digital Scrapbook Place Gallery

This is the 3rd & final version - this one I'll be putting in the family scrapbook. The boys can take their books with them when they leave home; this one is for ME. I like this one, with both my boys, the best.

Journaling:
God loves little boys and all that they do
Exploring and laughing and roughhousing, too.

God loves their energy, eagerness and wit.
He loves their serious side and their fanciful spirit.

He guides them and tends them while they grow,
Giving them all of the grace he can bestow.

God's plan for his boys is wondrous as well,
Because soon in their place little men will dwell.

How to communicate properly using email - Business Productivity

Whenever I conduct a business productivity workshop, I talk about the ?do?s and don?ts? of email communication. I?ve spent many years at a large organization where email was misused in a number of ways which lead to drastic declines in productivity. Email is a great communication tool, but it needs to be used in a proper manner in order to be effective. For many of you, the recommendations below will seem very basic, but I still wanted to share some guidelines for proper email communication because there are, unfortunately, a large group of people who don?t follow them. If you want to know more on how to follow some of the advice below in Microsoft Outlook 2010, you can watch the video called ?Communicate properly using email?.

1. Think of the ?subject? line as a ?summary? line

Every email has a subject line that many people use to determine whether or not they should read the email, save it or delete it. Think of the subject line as a summary of your email and try to add as much context as possible for the recipient.

For example, instead of just writing ?Meeting notes? in the subject line, write a more descriptive subject like ?Meeting notes from 2012 Strategic Planning meeting on Nov 10th?. This way the receiver can determine in an instant what to do with the email.

2. Be brief and to the point

Many business professionals are likely to receive over 100 emails a day. If you want your emails to be read, you need to make them brief. Read through the email before you send it and ask yourself if there is any way you can make it shorter and more to the point. In some cases you might want to attach a document with some of the text if you feel this is essential information that needs to be included in the email.

3. Make sure follow up actions are clearly articulated

Many emails contain follow up actions assigned to various people. If these actions are hidden in the text they stand a big risk of being missed. Make sure that all action items are clearly articulated with proper ownerships and deadlines. If you add this in a table it?s very easy for everyone to see.

To save time, I?ve added a ?follow up action? table template into Microsoft Outlook 2010 that I can easily insert into emails.

Everyone who has an action item assigned to them should be added to the ?to? field of the email. You might want to add some people to the ?cc? (short for carbon copy) field if you believe they should have a copy of the email. Personally I feel that copies of email are being sent too often and for the wrong reasons, so I recommend you use the cc field sparsely.

4. Check your spelling

In my eyes it?s very unprofessional to send out email messages with spelling errors, especially since most email clients today have built in spell checkers that can help you correct your spelling mistakes.

If you are using Microsoft Outlook 2010 you can enable the option to ?Always check spelling before sending? an email. This way you will be prompted if there is a spelling mistake in your text before you send an email ? it?s a nice ?safety net?.

5. Add a signature to your email

Make sure to add a proper business signature to your email. The signature should include your full contact details ? including the email address. Make sure that the email hyperlink (mailto:) contains the correct email address. It?s happened numerous times that I?ve clicked an email address link in a signature and the address is someone else?s.

6. Add an automatic reply if you are unable to respond

If you are traveling, attending a conference, or just busy on a project and you are unable to respond to email within a reasonable time frame (I would say about one-two business days depending on the nature of your business), I recommend that you add an automatic reply to your email. This sets the right expectations and it enables the sender to contact someone else in case they need to get a rapid response. If you are using Microsoft Outlook 2010 with Microsoft Exchange 2010 you can add different automatic replies inside and outside the organization.

A final note on email communication

As a final note I would like to add that written text always sounds much harsher then the spoken words. You should never write an email to someone when you are upset, you might regret it the day after, and when you do, there is no way to take it back. Also, make sure to be polite, use proper greeting phrases and refrain from using abbreviations or jargon (at least when you are communicating with people outside your organization).

If you follow these tips you will have come a long way and I can assure you that you will be much more effective in your email communication.

Different Types Of Vehicle Leasing Solutions | Multimedia Forensics

It is absolutely true fact hat these days vehicle leasing is becoming a very popular solution to lending to buying a business vehicle, but it can be a very beneficial solution for individuals as well. Every time you desire to buy a car or even simply rent some auto for a short period of time, vehicle leasing options could be the relevant answer.

It includes renting an automobile, similar to the facilities of leasing a house or an office. When opting for car lease, the finance company gets the automobile of your choice. They then give you a possibility you to use that automobile for the period of the lease in return for a payment that is to be covered per month.

If the automobile is used only for business needs, the repayments charged are completely tax deductible when automobile leasing. It included such issues as renting a depreciation which is your tax deduction.
Benefits
Some of the advantages of vehicle leasing are:
1. Rates can be a tax deduction for vehicles hired for business
2. Car leasing enables you to change your automobile every several years
3. Interest and monthly fees are fixed, so rates are known beforehand
4. Payments are generally considerably lower than a vehicle loan
5. The automobile is used as security against the car lease, so you may expect that the interest rates are normally much lower than automobile loans
6. They provide clients with pretty flexible terms from 2 to 5 years
7. You may get both brand new or used vehicles.

Types of car lease options available
1. operating vehicle leases,
2. finance vehicle leases
3. novated vehicle leases.
It is worth mentioning that the basic difference between finance and operating car lease facilities is at the end of the vehicle leasing term. In the case you opt for an operating lease, the lease lender retains ownership of the automobile leased, whereas in the event of finance leasing, the customer is required to pay out the balloon or residual fees and the client is to assume his ownership. Some issues at the end of a finance vehicle lease are as the following ones: pay out the balloon payment and have the car, trade in the automobile, or refinance the residual payment with some other automobile lease or loan.

It is necessary to admit that a fully maintained automobile lease is a finance leasing option that includes running rates of the car such as different services, tyres fuel, and so on and so forth. This type of automobile leasing is great if you need to have some fixed costs every month.

Novated vehicle leasing works rather differently to finance and operating solutions. In the event you are an employee wanting leasing a car, you are recommended to consider novated vehicle leasing if you desire to salary package an automobile.

More Hot Weather For Southern California, Says UCLA Study

The L.A. Times reports on a study by UCLA climate researchers who conclude, based on supercomputer analysis of a model "2,500 times more precise than previous climate models for the region" that the area around L.A. will experience more (and more extreme) hot spells in decades to come. From the article: "The study, released Thursday, is the first to model the Southland's complex geography of meandering coastlines, mountain ranges and dense urban centers in high enough resolution to predict temperatures down to the level of micro climate zones, each measuring 2 1/4 square miles. The projections are for 2041 to 2060. Not only will the number of hot days increase, but the study found that the hottest of those days will break records, said Alex Hall, lead researcher on the study by UCLA's Institute of the Environment and Sustainability."

(AP) ? Tropical Storm Debby spun drenching rains Monday over northern Florida as it hung nearly stationary over the Gulf of Mexico, threatening to inundate low-lying neighborhoods.

Tropical storm warnings were in effect along the Florida Panhandle as the storm parked offshore. Even with the storm's center far from land, it lashed Florida with heavy rains and spawned isolated tornadoes that killed at least one person.

And in Alabama, crews planned to continue searching for a South Carolina man who disappeared in rough surf Sunday afternoon. The man, whose name and hometown were not immediately released, was vacationing with his family when he went underwater around 1:45 p.m. Sunday, said Melvin Shepherd, director of beach safety for Orange Beach, Ala.

The storm also prompted the closing of the sole bridge to St. George Island, popular vacation island in Florida.

Residents in several counties near the crook of Florida's elbow were urged to leave low-lying neighborhoods because of the threat of flooding. High winds forced the closure of an interstate bridge that spans Tampa Bay and links St. Petersburg with areas to the southeast. In several locations, homes and businesses were damaged by high winds authorities believe were from tornadoes.

Authorities in the Tampa Bay area were asking residents and tourists to stay away from flooded streets. Some streets were still under water early Monday, while others were blocked with debris.

The constant barrage of wind and rain triggered fears of the widespread flooding that occurred across the Florida Panhandle during Hurricane Dennis in 2005. Officials on Monday said the main bridge to St. George Island was closed as the storm loomed. Power was already out on the island and authorities said it could be out for days.

As of 8 a.m. EDT Monday, Debby's center was essentially stationary about 90 miles (145 kilometers) south-southwest of Apalachicola, Fla. Debby's top sustained winds were around 50 mph (85 kph) with little change in strength expected over the next day or so. The forecast map indicated the storm could inch forward through the week, eventually coming ashore over the Panhandle. However, a storm's path is difficult to discern days in advance.

Underscoring the unpredictable nature of tropical storms, forecasters discontinued a tropical storm warning Sunday afternoon for Louisiana after forecast models indicated Debby wasn't likely to turn west. At one point, forecasters expected the storm to come ashore in that state.

"There are always going to be errors in making predictions. There is never going to be a perfect forecast," said Chris Landsea, a meteorologist at the National Hurricane Center.

A major concern will be flooding from heavy rainfall. The storm is moving slowly, allowing its clouds more time to unload rain. A public advisory said parts of northern Florida could get 10 to 15 inches of rain, with some areas getting as much as 25 inches.

The Highlands County Sheriff's Office said in a news release that several tornadoes moved through the area southeast of Tampa, damaging homes.

Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Nell Hays said a woman was found dead in a house in Venus that was destroyed in the storm. A child found in the same house was taken to the hospital. No further information was available on the child's condition or either person's age.

Authorities urged residents to leave low-lying neighborhoods in Franklin, Taylor and Wakulla counties because of flooding. Shelters were open in the area.

Wind tore the roof off a marina in St. Pete Beach, and a pier was heavily damaged, said Tom Iovino, a Pinellas County government spokesman. He said no injuries were reported.

As of Sunday, 23 percent of oil and gas production in the region had been suspended, according to a government hurricane response team. Employees have been evacuated from 13 drilling rigs and 61 production platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.

The storm was not expected to result in higher oil and gas prices.

"It's largely a non-event for oil," said Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at the Oil Price Information Service.

The governor declared a statewide emergency, and a tropical storm warning was in effect for most of Florida's Gulf coast. At least one person was killed by a twister in Florida, and crews in Alabama searched for a man who disappeared in rough surf Sunday.

In St. Pete Beach on Florida's Gulf coast, a tornado ripped the roof off a marina and an apartment complex, and felled fences, trees and signs.

Kourosh Bakhtiarian's yard was flooded. He said people were driving around to survey the area, and he was upset police hadn't closed off the neighborhood streets.

"We have a lot of visitors from outside of this area. They just want to see exactly where the disaster is. I mean, this is not the happiest time. Usually people come to the beach when it's sunny and nice and they can go to get a tan. But today, we saw a lot of visitors here."

State officials estimated at least 35,000 homes and businesses were without power, including Bakhtiarian's home.

The storm closed the sole bridge to St. George Island, a popular vacation island in Florida. Power was already out on the island and authorities said it could be for days.

"The tourists cleared out. It's not a good thing and hurts the economy during a week in peak season," said Patrick Sparks, 26, a manager at Eddy Teach's bar. "It's a tropical storm ? it's not even a category one (hurricane). It's a little rash to send everyone home."

Residents in several counties near the crook of Florida's elbow were urged to leave low-lying neighborhoods because of the threat of flooding. Shelters were opened in some areas.

High winds forced the closure of an interstate bridge that spans Tampa Bay and links St. Petersburg with areas to the southeast. In several locations, homes and businesses were damaged by high winds authorities believe were from tornadoes.

The constant barrage of wind and rain triggered fears of the widespread flooding that occurred across the Florida Panhandle during Hurricane Dennis in 2005.

Debby's center was essentially stationary about 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of Apalachicola. Debby's top sustained winds were around 45 mph (72 kph) with little change in strength expected over the next day or so. The forecast map indicated the storm would crawl northeast, eventually coming ashore in Florida later this week. However, a storm's path is difficult to discern days in advance.

Underscoring the unpredictable nature of tropical storms, forecasters at one point thought Debby would head west toward Texas.

"There are always going to be errors in making predictions. There is never going to be a perfect forecast," said Chris Landsea, a meteorologist at the National Hurricane Center.

The storm is moving slowly, allowing its clouds more time to unload rain. A public advisory said parts of northern Florida could get 10 to 15 inches of rain, with some areas getting as much as 25 inches.

The Highlands County Sheriff's Office said several tornadoes moved through the area southeast of Tampa, damaging homes.

Sheriff's office spokeswoman Nell Hays said a woman was found dead in a house in Venus that was destroyed in the storm. A child found in the same house was taken to the hospital.

No further information was available on the child's condition or either person's age.

In Orange Beach, Ala., fire and rescue workers searched for a South Carolina man who was vacationing with his family when he went under. His name and hometown were not immediately released.
