09/29/11 Baltimore, Maryland ? ?Rare earth prices,? Bloomberg reports this morning, ?are set to extend their decline from records this year.? They?re officially declaring one boom we?ve been following with some enthusiasm of late? busted.
As your friendly publisher, we?re glad Byron King pulled the trigger on 178% gains in Molycorp when he did. But we?re also keen to suggest there?s more to the story?
It?s tempting to draw a similar conclusion to Bloomberg when you examine the recent performance of REMX, the rare earth ETF:
Indeed, the most abundant rare earths, cerium and lanthanum, could plunge another 50% in price over the next year, according to an analysis by Hallgarten & Co. in New York.
The reality is a bit more complex.
Put simply, the easy money?s been made in rare earths. Yes, China controls 97% of world production. Yes, China has clamped down on exports. But China can?t stop the users of rare earths from looking for alternatives.
?If you think you can keep raising the prices for those materials and still keep your customers, you?re crazy,? says Jack Lifton, one of the foremost experts on rare earths. ?The principal customer for rare earth metals is a global automotive industry using rare earth permanent magnets. That industry will engineer this stuff out.?
The recent rough patch for rare earth stocks was also fueled by a J.P. Morgan report on industry darling Molycorp, which we cited briefly a week ago Wednesday. In light of events today, it?s worth a closer look.
?What did the JP Morgan report say?? asks our own Byron King, who?s been onto the rare earths story since early 2008. ?Not as much as you might think, really.
?The report noted that rare earth prices have fallen since July, which is hardly big news if you follow these things. The report also speculated that non-Chinese demand will fall in the near term, which is also hardly a state secret worthy of WikiLeaks.
?The big revelation was that JP Morgan cut its price target for Molycorp shares from the previous $105 per share estimate down to $66. Still, to me at least, that wasn?t ?news,? because I never really expected Molycorp shares to get much above the $60 range.?
Indeed, Byron recommended getting out of Molycorp at $52.52 on Jan. 12 of this year? good for a 178% gain in four months. This morning, the stock is below $34.
?Savvy investors are finished,? Byron writes by email this morning, ?listening to stories about how some Canadian junior named XYZ Co., with four employees in Vancouver, has an ore body on the far side of nowhere.
?Even if the Vancouver company has eight employees, and one of them was a chemistry major 25 years ago before he became a stockbroker, the mineralogy and geology stories are nice, but won?t get you anywhere. Not anymore. Doesn?t impress anybody.
?Now, people want to hear about the metallurgy, at a graduate-level of chemistry, and not just arm waving. Investors want feasibility studies and engineering diagrams from serious laboratories.
?That is, people want to know that there?s real chemistry and real engineering going on. ?Show me the test tubes!??
And ?show me the application,? we might add.

Intergi Entertainment?has nabbed an exclusive ad agreement with online games leader Bigpoint to manage Bigpoint?s online advertising in North America, the company announced today.
Bigpoint has more than 200 million registered users for its 60 online games, which include titles such as Battlestar Galactica Online, DarkOrbit, Seafight, and Farmerama.
Bigpoint has been making a push into the U.S. for the past 18 months and is tapping Intergi to provide online ad services. Heiko Hubertz, chief executive of Bigpoint, said that, just as Bigpoint tries to make top-notch games, its advertising has to be top notch as well.
Many of Bigpoint?s games are free to play, where users play for free but pay real money for virtual goods. But the games can be monetized via ads as well, and Deerfield Beach, Fla.-based Intergi will find the advertisers who want to place ads next to Bigpoint?s online games.
Over the past three years, Intergi has seen revenue growth of 2,383 percent. The company, headed by CEO Jayson Dubin, CEO, creates custom, site-specific, or channel-wide opportunities for advertisers across entertainment and gaming properties.?It has 20 employees and was formed in 2007. Rivals include IGN and GameSpot.
As one of its services, Intergi has a video publishing platform called Playwire that makes it easy for sites to make money from video advertising.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iranian authorities have summoned an unspecified number of people for questioning over their alleged links to BBC's Farsi-language service, the country's intelligence chief said Sunday.
The summons followed the arrest this month in Iran of six independent filmmakers for allegedly providing the British Broadcasting Corp. with video and news reports perceived as damaging to Iran.
The BBC said its Farsi channel had bought rights to the filmmakers' films in the past but had not commissioned their work. Neither Iran nor the BBC have identified the filmmakers by name.
The intelligence chief, Heidar Moslehi, also accused the BBC of operating as a cover for British intelligence and of seeking to harm Iran by hosting Iranian dissidents. He made the remarks to Iranian state TV.
The timing of the filmmakers' arrests was never made clear, although it appeared to follow an earlier broadcast by the BBC Persian service of a documentary on Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has final say on all state matters in Iran.
Iranian opposition websites have said the filmmakers include Nasser Saffarian, Mojtaba Mirtahmasb, Hadi Afarideh, Mohsen Shahrnaz, Mehrdad Zahedian and Katayoun Shahabi.
"The British intelligence services have begun a new phase of anti-Iranian activities under the cover of the BBC," Moslehi said.
He also issued a veiled warning of more arrests in the case.
"This is the beginning of our activities in this issue," he said. "We will strongly carry out our obligations in this matter whenever necessary."
Moslehi also lashed out at the BBC for sympathizing with Iranian opposition groups that he claimed are "dedicated to harm the Islamic Republic."
Iran has gone to great lengths to jam broadcasts and block websites of foreign-based Farsi-language media, including BBC Persian and Voice of America.
Tehran has accused the BBC, along with the British government, of fomenting the mass protests that broke out after Iran's disputed presidential election in 2009. Both deny the accusation. The BBC's Farsi service has no office in Tehran.
Also Sunday, a senior Iranian judiciary official warned that those found working for the BBC will be treated as people intended on undermining Iran's Islamic establishment.
"By launching satellite channels, the enemies seek to harm the (ruling) system," Deputy Head of Judiciary Ebrahim Raisi told the semi-official Mehr news agency. "These channels receive their information from intelligence and spy agencies ... those who work for these channels ... will be investigated."
The BBC has described the filmmakers' arrests as an attempt to pressure the international broadcaster.

There is no country in the world whether developed or developing where the violence / crime against the women does not happen. At least one-third woman killed every year by their intimate partner in the US. Every six hours a woman lost her life by an intimate partner in South Africa. In India on an average 22 women are murdered in dowry related cases every year.
Every day two women are killed in Guatemala. When we talk about human trafficking women constitutes 80% of all the people trafficked in a year and the worst is 79% are being trafficked for sex trade. In Thailand 10% of its GDP comes from Prostitution this has given rise to many anti social elements and AIDS threat on a much larger level. Majority of the staff are women.
More than 60 million women are child brides and majority of them are from South Asia and Sub- Saharan region where this heinous custom is still alive and being practice in distant hidden corners sometime even in the civilized corners of these regions.

In a 2008 survey of 4,700 Afghan women, 87.2% had experienced at least one form of physical, sexual or psychological violence or forced marriage in their lifetimes and the situation is continued to be worsen due to the increase complexities of this banana republic which still faces the nexus of violence from all corners. One of the major causes in the increase in violence against women is the rise in human trafficking and illiteracy.
Whereas in Malaysia which portrays itself as a peaceful and prosperous civilized society women continues to suffer in the darker corners of this shining society where the violence against them rises with the change in year. Malaysian police?s statistics showed that the number of reported domestic violence cases went up by 505 from 3,264 in 2006 to 3,769 in 2008.

Management is aggressively increasing long-term contract business and the more profitable intermodal operations. "We expect revenues to rise 12% and EPS to increase 29% during the next 12 months."
McKesson (MCK) "provides a wide range of services and products to independent pharmacies, retail chains and institutions in the U.S. and Canada. Their services and products reduce costs and improve ef?ciency. The company operates two segments. "
The company is adding a third operation to their existing Distribution Solutions and Technological Solutions segments:
"To diversify, McKesson acquired U.S. Oncology, which is dedicated to cancer treatment and research, in December 2010, for $2.2 billion. McKesson?s sales will likely increase 6%, and EPS 17% during the next 12 months. "
Ross Stores (ROST) operates 1,091 stores in 27 states and Guam featuring high quality apparel, shoes jewelry and home furnishings. The company is expanding into Arkansas and Illinois with 15 news stores.
Ross acquires merchandise at a steep discount by buying manufacturer cancellations and turnovers. Their discounted merchandise becomes increasingly attractive in economic downturns, including the current financial climate.
"These will jump-start Ross?s presence and provide noticeable growth in the near future. We forecast sales and earnings growth of 12% during the next 12 months."
Tupperware Brands (TUP) "is a leading direct seller of beauty and household products marketed by an independent sales force of 2.6 million representatives?Tupperware derives 86% of sales from foreign markets, including 56% from developing countries."
As sales in developing countries boom, The Stock Advisors expect sales to rise 10% or more, and "EPS will likely increase 21% during the next 12 months, boosted by strong sales in the U.S., Canada and emerging market countries."
