Oil posts slight loss; gasoline up to $3.33

The price of oil fell slightly Friday as a report showing a cooling off in new home sales offset the positive influence of ebullient U.S. stock markets.

Benchmark oil fell 7 cents to close at $95.88 in trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. It ended the week with a gain of 32 cents.

The Commerce Department said new-home sales fell 7.3 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 369,000. That's down from November's rate, which was the fastest in 2 ? years. Still, sales for the entire year were the best since 2009.

Oil prices are being supported by investors' confident mood, reflected by rising indexes in global stock markets and gains by the euro against the dollar.

A weaker dollar makes crude cheaper ? and a more attractive investment ? for traders using other currencies. On Friday, the euro was up at $1.3458 from $1.3378 late Thursday in New York.

A batch of mostly positive earnings reports from Corporate America buoyed U.S. stock markets. The S&P 500 broke through 1,500 Thursday for the first time since December 2007 and lingered above that milestone on Friday. European stocks posted strong gains as well.

In the U.S., the average price for a gallon of gas rose a penny to $3.33, up 4 cents from a week ago. Although the price of oil moved little this week, it did rise more than $4 in the year's first three weeks, and that increase is starting to show up at the gas pump.

Brent crude, used to price international varieties of oil, ended flat at $113.28 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline rose 1 cent to finish at $2.88 per gallon.

? Natural gas ended unchanged at $3.44 per 1,000 cubic feet.

? Heating oil fell 3 cents to finish at $3.06 a gallon.

Asian shares down; Seoul hit by weak techs but Nikkei surges

TOKYO (Reuters) - Asian shares fell on Friday, hurt by a drop in regional technology stocks and on caution ahead of the corporate earnings season, but gains in Japan and Australia limited overall losses for equities.

Upbeat manufacturing reports from the United States, Germany and China underpinned sentiment for other assets, supporting copper while curbing selling pressure in oil.

"The PMI indicators from the U.S., Europe and China should serve to keep markets tracking higher," said CMC Markets senior trader Tim Waterer in Sydney.

The MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan eased 0.5 percent, and was set for a weekly drop of 1 percent, its biggest such loss in two months.

A 1.4 percent slide in the technology sector dragged the pan-Asian index down, as tech-heavy markets such as South Korea and Taiwan fell.

Seoul shares declined 0.9 percent, weighed by weak profits for automakers, while tech shares continued to falter as Samsung Electronics announced cautious spending plans for the first time since the global financial crisis.

Shares of Apple Inc's suppliers extended their declines after Apple's below-estimate results announced earlier in the week: Taiwan's Largan Precision weakened and Samsung shares shed as much as 3.3 percent.

Hong Kong and Shanghai were the other laggards as investors took profits from recent rallies and remained cautious ahead of the upcoming earnings season.

A 0.3 percent rise in London copper to $8,118 a tonne and gold prices steadying around $1,669 an ounce helped push commodity-reliant Australian shares up 0.5 percent to a fresh 21-month high, marking an eighth straight session of gains.

U.S. crude eased 0.1 percent to $95.87 a barrel and Brent inched down 0.2 percent to $113.11.

"It now seems that the stronger tone in global equity markets, coupled with a notable easing in European and US market tensions, is leading to short-term pressure on gold," said Ed Meir, an analyst at INTL FCStone, in a research note.

European markets are seen falling, with financial spread-betters predicting London's FTSE 100, Paris's CAC-40 and Frankfurt's DAX would open down as much as 0.4 percent. U.S. stock futures were down 0.2 percent, pointing to a softer Wall Street start.

JAPAN IN SPOTLIGHT

Japan's Nikkei stock average outperformed its Asian peers with a 2.9 percent surge as the yen hit fresh lows versus the dollar and the euro on expectations Japan will continue to pursue bold policies to beat deflation and stimulate growth. The Nikkei rose for an 11th straight week.

"Trading on Japan is gaining momentum among foreign investors, centering around the dollar/yen, which has dictated Nikkei's direction," said Tetsuro Ii, the chief executive of Commons Asset Management.

The yen's slide bolsters sentiment for Japanese equities as it lifts earnings prospects for exporters, ahead of the quarterly earnings season set to start next week.

The dollar scaled its highest level since June 2010 to reach 90.695 yen early on Friday and the euro rose to 121.32, its highest since April 2011. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's new administration has made clear it wants a weaker yen, providing investors a reason to short the currency.

More than 80 percent of Japanese firms are in favour of Abe's drive for aggressive monetary easing and huge fiscal spending, though most also feared Japan would face a debt crisis within a few years, according to a Reuters poll.

The yen's two-month decline has more legs, many traders and analysts believe, noting the yen has barely caught up to levels before a potential debt default by Greece sparked the euro zone debt crisis and sent the euro plummeting nearly three years ago.

The yen was around 95 yen against the dollar and 123 yen against the euro early in May 2010 when protests flared up in Greece against its austerity steps in exchange for a bailout.

Despite the recent rallies, the Nikkei remains well below levels before the 2008 financial crisis while the Standard & Poor's 500 Index and Germany's benchmark stock index have both already exceeded that level, thanks to the weakness of the euro and the dollar, measured against a basket of currencies.

"JPY weakness should continue over the coming year driven by an expansion of the Bank of Japan's balance sheet relative to the European Central Bank and the Federal Reserve," said Kit Juckes, FX strategist at Societe Generale in a note. "I don't know how long the USD/JPY is going to pause at around 90, but a move to 100 still seems very likely in the longer run."

Allisons Brain - Chuck Morse's blog

Update - January 21st, 2013
2013 got off to a great start, as Allison and Bob were able to take their first holiday together in about 1 ? years! They spent 8 days in Antigua in early January and liked it a lot. Circumstances permitting they will go back to Antigua for a longer period next winter. Allison has had a raft of medical appointments since their return. Dr. Peters, the plastic surgeon who operated with Dr. Lesiuk to do the second cranioplasty on December 7th, says that the incision is healing very nicely and Allison will go back to see him in six months. Dr. Lesiuk?s impression after meeting with Allison this past week is that she is continuing to improve. Allison says that she has good days and bad days, which Dr. Lesiuk says is completely normal for someone recovering from a brain injury. Dr. Lesiuk is arranging an angiogram in the next while, as since the May 28th operation there haven?t been any pictures of what the aneurysm site now looks like. Dr. Lesiuk says this is because the four titanium clips used to block off the aneurysm are so large that they cast a shadow which prevents capturing an image of the area with any test other than an angiogram.
Allison and Bob also had a meeting at the Aphasia Centre of Ottawa last week, and Allison is interested in going to weekly sessions there once her overall health permits her attendance. Allison?s outpatient speech therapy sessions at the Rehab Centre have ended, and she has a new private speech therapist (Evelyn Tan) coming to the house twice a week beginning on January 23rd. Allison also continues to have twice weekly music therapy sessions with Cheryl Jones, which she enjoys a lot. At times there are issues as to whether the music element of the therapy meets Allison?s rigorous standards; however, with the benefit of Cheryl?s advice and guidance sometimes Allison is able to be convinced, at least for a period, that it is the process of doing music therapy, and its hoped-for by-product of stimulating neurological pathways, that is the more important for present purposes. That said, Allison continues to also play the piano regularly, and also to enjoy musical visits from a number of friends.
Allison?s most recent Rehab Centre speech therapist recommended that Allison commence occupational therapy, as her communication skills are now strong enough to benefit from it. However, we are being told that because of limited resources Allison would receive very little OT as an outpatient, and we?ve also been told that receiving much OT through the public health care / Community Care Access Centre is also unlikely. The upshot of this is that we have recently been in touch with a private occupational therapist who we will likely end up also engaging.
On the physical front, Allison is herself noticing that she is getting stronger, and she resumes twice weekly sessions with a personal fitness trainer at the YMCA this week. Unfortunately the crappy weather here makes Allison going outside for walks very often fairly problematic.
A long-time friend Nick Newton, who has been in the news in Ottawa recently on account of his own health battle, and his longstanding philanthropic efforts, is organizing an event from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday February 10th in Ottawa. One half of the proceeds of the event is being donated to Allison?s trust fund, and the other half is going to the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa ? which is hosting the event. In case anyone is interested in attending please RSVP to Nick at newtfoto@rogers.com

Mazda VX-1 ? Indonesian rebadge of the Suzuki Ertiga

mazda-vx1-suzuki-ertiga

To get meaningful volume in Indonesia, one must have an affordable seven-seat MPV to sell, a car like the Toyota Avanza. If you don?t have it, rebadge it, and that?s what Mazda has done with this upcoming Mazda VX-1, which is based on the Suzuki Ertiga MPV.

Taken from Indonesian website detikOto, there?s not much info accompanying these pics, other than the fact that this ?MPV kelas bawah? (their words, not ours) is new ground for Mazda (other MPVs in the stable include the Biante and Mazda 8) and that it will be offered with manual transmission. It remains to be seen if the VX-1 will use Suzuki?s 1.4 litre K-series engine or Mazda?s own powerplant.

First launched in India early last year, the Ertiga sits on a Suzuki SX4 platform stretched to have a long 2,740 mm wheelbase. It?s available with the abovementioned 1.4 petrol or a 1.3 litre Fiat turbodiesel with 88 hp/200 Nm. Click here for a full gallery of the Suzuki Ertiga.

The Small Business Guide To Online Advertising - Small Business ...

Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don?t know which half. ~John Wanamaker

Where to spend your advertising dollars can be one of those areas that can drive a small business owner batty.

Marketing and advertising made perfect sense before you started your own business. ?Some newspaper ads, a direct mail campaign, sprinkled with some clever online advertising?.and then you sit back and wait for the customers to come pouring through the door.

Yeah??it doesn?t work like that.

Old fashioned advertising ad

Who knew it could be so hard? ?You learn pretty quickly that everything you thought you knew was wrong and everything you thought would work, doesn?t. ?At least not without a lot of effort. ?One of the areas that new business owners find both exciting and confusing ?is online advertising. ?There are so many choices and sometimes it can be intimidating.

People are quickly moving towards the internet for everything from research to online purchases, so if you?re not advertising in that space you?re missing out on a pretty big chunk of your potential market. ?This article will hopefully demystify some of your advertising choices and help you get started in the online advertising space without losing your shirt.

Every business is different, the advertising that works for one business may not work for another. ?The good thing with online advertising is that you can usually start small and gradually expand your budget if you like the results your seeing.

Adwords is the dominant player in the online advertising space. ?Their search engine market share is so big that most new advertisers start here as a safe bet. ?For small business owners, they offer 3 main services:

Search Marketing ? When you do a Google search, on the top of the page, and along the right side of the page (see image below), you?ll see several text ads included in the results. ?This is search based marketing where Google pairs the search query from the user to the keywords that you would like your ad triggered for. ?You only pay when a user clicks on your ad and they are taken to your website. ?A basic example would be if someone typed in the term ?Pizza in Charlotte?, and one of the keywords you were bidding on were the keywords? pizza? and ?Charlotte?, your ad may appear in the search results in the paid advertising section of the page.

Samples google search results showing adwords ads

When and where your ad displays is a combination of how much your bidding on a keyword (it?s run as an online auction where you compete with other?advertisers for a given keyword), the relevancy of your ad, and the actual keywords that you?re bidding on. ?One of the biggest advantages of this type of advertising is that it?s one of the only forms of advertising where the consumer is actually trying to find what your offering. ?This makes these ads much more relevant than other forms of advertising, where it?s seen more as an intrusion.

Who should consider this

If you?re just getting started with advertising online, this is a great place to start. ?You have total control over your budget and can start small and expand as you start to see results. ?Word of caution. ?Despite what Google might say, it can be complicated to set up properly and can be very expensive if you don?t know what your doing and aren?t?monitoring?your campaigns closely. ?Best advice is to hire someone to manage your campaign, or to at least pay for someone to set it up properly for you and maybe do some quarterly maintenance.

Display Ads ? In addition to their search advertising platform, Google has partnered with thousands of websites and have essentially rented ad space on these sites. ?In display advertising, you can advertise using image based banner ads, video, text, ?and dynamic ads such as animated GIF?s.

Sample display ad on Youtube

When you setup a display campaign with Google, you can enter criteria as to where you want your ad shown. ?It can be targeted geographically, by audience type or by the category of websites that you prefer. ?While it?s not as an exact match as search advertising, display ads let you reach a much wider audience than search ads and in a more visually appealing way. ?Since it?s not as tightly targeted as search ads, the costs are usually a bit lower.

Who should consider this

I usually suggest to start with the search ads first. ?If your finding success with your search ads but want more reach, or your not getting enough clicks with your ads, display advertising is a great place to get into broader advertising without breaking your budget. ?Like search ads, you can start with a small budget and expand if you find it?s working for you. ?You?ll need to find a graphic designer to create banner ads for you in several sizes?as explained here.

Remarketing ? Ever go to a website to do some comparison shopping and then find over the next several weeks that their ads are everywhere? ?They didn?t?immediately?start a massive online advertising campaign after you left the site, they are remarketing to you. ?The way remarketing works is that when a visitor visits your website (or a particular page if you like), Google drops a ?cookie? on the visitors computer and you will be able to directly market to them for a set period of time after they leave your website. ?They use their massive display ad space inventory to serve your ads while the?unsuspecting?user surfs the web. ?It may sound a little creepy, but it?s a very effective form of advertising as you?re able to stay top of mind with a potential customer while they think about (or comparison shop)?a purchase.

Who should consider this

If you?re already running display ads with Google, a remarketing campaign is a great way to get extra?mileage?out of all those visitors. ?You?ll also already be familiar with the display ad interface. ?If you do run a remarketing campaign through Google, you will need someone to help set it up for you as it requires some computer code to be placed on your website. ?You?ll also have to adhere to Google?s privacy policy guidelines.

**If you?re interested in creating your own Adwords campaign, check out this article by Hubspot.

Bing is the Microsoft version of Google Adwords search marketing. ?While Bing has a much smaller slice of the search engine market, they still reach a wide audience. ?Their partnership with Yahoo also allows your ads to be shown in the Yahoo search results. ?The nice thing with advertising on Bing is that there is a lot less competition for advertising, usually resulting in advertising costs lower than you would find with Adwords.

Through their Microsoft Advertising arm, you can also get into display advertising. ?Be warned, like in typical Microsoft fashion, they do not make it easy to navigate their site. ?You may find yourself just going around in circles trying to find what you?re looking for.

Who should consider this

I usually recommend Bing advertising if you?re reaching your maximum potential with Adwords and you want additional reach, or you?re finding the cost per clicks in Adwords is just too expensive for your industry. ?Insurance, lending, legal and travel are just a few of the industries that may find Bing a less expensive alternative as the costs on Adwords may be too high to make it worthwhile.

Facebook advertising can be awesome for the right business. ?You see a lot of dieting and gluten free businesses advertising in this space as it?s very profitable for them. ?With Facebook ads, you can create small display ads that show up while a user is browsing through their streams. ?You can target your ads based on geography,?interests, and demographic data. ?You ?thought all of those ?Likes? you create every day on Facebook is just for fun? ?Facebook uses that data to build a profile of you so they can then serve ads against your interests.

Typically you?ll find that the cost per click is lower than Adwords, though the traffic you get isn?t as targeted. ?A good practice is to use ads that direct to your?business?s Facebook Fan page to build an audience there so you can create a direct line of communication with your customers.

Sample Facebook ads

Who should consider this

Your marketing to a different audience than you find on Adwords or Bing. ?You have the ability to control your budget so it may be a good idea to test the Facebook waters and see what kind of response you get. ?If you?re just launching a Fan Page for your business, this is a good way to build up Fans in a hurry

** If you?re interested in giving Facebook advertising a try, check out this article from Kissmetrics

Twitter recently rolled out Sponsored?Tweets and Sponsored Accounts to most advertisers, allowing small businesses to get into the Twitter advertising mix. ?You have two advertising options as a small?business?owner:

Promoted Accounts ? Twitter will search through your current followers and ?will then search out similar accounts not following you, adding you a recommended account when they are looking to follow people.

Promoted Tweets ? When you traditionally send out a Tweet from your account, it will be broadcasted to the people that are currently following you. ?With Promoted Tweets, your Tweets can reach an audience outside of just your followers, allowing you greater reach than you currently have.

Twitter promoted tweets

Who should consider this

If you?re currently very active on Twitter and you?re finding success with it, Twitter advertising can potentially supercharge your growth on the platform. ?If you aren?t using it, or just getting started, I would recommend that you start building a loyal following before you attempt any sort of paid advertising on the platform.

** If you?re interested in advertising on Twitter, check out this guide from Search Engine Watch.

LinkedIn offers ad targeting very similar to what you would find on Facebook. ?You can target your ads based on industry, job titles, LinkedIn groups or company size. ?You pay on a cost per click basis, meaning you only pay when someone clicks on your ad. ?The cost per clicks are higher than you would find on Facebook, and even Adwords (depending on the industry).

Sample of a LinkedIn ad

Who should consider it

If you?re business is BtoC, don?t bother. ?If you?re in BtoB and target specific industries and professionals, LinkedIn ads can be a laser targeted way for you to reach that specific audience. ?Like most of the other platforms, you can set an initial budget and run a test campaign to see how effective it is. ?Like with Twitter, I would only recommend using it if you are active on LinkedIn as many people might look up your personal/company?profile to find out more about you. ?You want to give the impression that you are active on the platform.

** If you?re interested in advertising on LinkedIn, check out this guide from Hubspot.

Directory Listings

Directories are everywhere and come in all shapes and sizes. ?You have general directories with no specific audience, niche directories, which target a specific industry, location specific directories, which only serve a single city or town, as well as dozens of other types of directories.

Many directories are free and it?s a great way to get your business name out there, as well as a link pointing back to your website (for search engine optimization). ?The question is, should I pay to be included in a directory? ?The answer is, it depends. ?For many directories, the real benefit you?re getting out of it is a link and citation from that directory for your website, which may in turn help your business rank higher in the search results. ?Sometimes a directory will rank higher than your website in the search engine results for your main keyword, in which case you may consider paying for inclusion to try and capture some of that traffic.

Brownbook sample directory

Who should consider this

When it comes to free listings, adding your business is generally a good idea, it?s free exposure for your business. ?When it comes to paying for being included in a directory, I would recommend that you be cautious, as many directories just aren?t worth it, even if the salesperson puts on a great show during their sales pitch. ?When I would consider paying for inclusion is when it?s an industry specific association for your businesses or something similarly specific for you, like the local Chamber of Commerce. ?If you are going to pay, contact some individuals already listed to see if they think it was worth the cost before you do so.

** If you want to learn how to get the most out of your directory listing, check out this article by Getlisted.org

Advertising on Blogs

Popular blogs often attract a loyal following. ?Some bloggers in turn, give advertisers access to the loyal following they have?amassed. ?If there are popular blogs that reach your target audience, or have an audience in your trade area, this can be a great (and low cost) way for you to advertise online. ?Here are 3 popular ways to advertise via a blog:

Banner ads ? Pretty straightforward, you place an image banner (can also be a text link) on their website in exchange for a monthly/yearly fee. ?The banner may show on every page of the site, or just specific pages, like the homepage. ?If the blog owner can prove to you that they generate a steady flow of traffic each month, and it?s your target audience, this may be a good deal. ?Prices are usually always negotiable as your not dealing with a large corporation here.

Sponsored emails ? If the blog owner has a large email list of loyal fans, you may have the opportunity to sponsor their email newsletter. ?Sometimes?this takes the form of a traditional ad at the end of each email, other times your business is mentioned somewhere in the body of the content, citing you as a sponsor. ?They might even include a call to action to check out your business. ?People who subscribe (and read) these newsletters are usually pretty loyal, so it could be a good choice. ?If you do decide to try this, be sure to ask for verification of the size of their email list (how many subscribers) as well as the open rate for their last several newsletters. ?Open rate is how many of those emails were actually opened.

Sponsored blog posts ? Sometimes a blogger will write a blog post specifically about your business or product, in exchange for payment.?Sometimes?it?s a monetary payment and other times it?s a free service or product. The very important thing here is that it?s?transparent?in the article that it?s a sponsored blog post. ?Sometimes?bloggers get in trouble for recommending something without telling their audience that they were paid by the business mentioned. ?It?s not common these days, but it still happens and can make your business look bad in the process. ?The most common way a small business gets involved in this is to offer the local blogger a sample of your product, or let them test out your service, in exchange for an honest review on their blog. ?Many bloggers are flattered by the opportunity, and as long as you?re running a good business, it should be a win/win for everyone.

Who should consider this

If you have a niche audience and there are popular blogs in your area/niche, it?s a great (and usually less expensive) way to reach them. ?One thing I have done in the past is to offer bloggers some free products or services that they can give away to their audience. ?They love the idea of rewarding their audience, it?s free to them, and it gives you some?valuable?exposure. ?A win all around.

Platforms I left out

There are other platforms available, but for the small business owner, especially if you?re new, probably best to leave out. ?I was going to include Yelp as an option (I never used it), but after doing research, it didn?t get very good reviews. ?There are also smaller ad platforms like 7Search and Chikita that can be used, but it?s generally best to start with the bigger platforms first as they reach a bigger audience and their user interface is generally easier to navigate.

Have you tried paying for online advertising yet?

As you can see, there are numerous paid opportunities to advertise your business online. ?Some are easy and straightforward, others may require some assistance. ?The main point is, there is a huge marketplace of potential customers waiting for you to find them online, hopefully one of these platforms will help you do that. ?Got questions? ?Leave them in the comments below, or feel free to contact me.

Additional Child Tax Credit Information 2012, 2013 ... - Finance

Other options for saving money with kids

Child TaxChild Tax

Having a child is no joke, and on top of that the financial burden that comes along with it can really slow down the progress of a family.

Here are some extra ways to lower your tax burden by taking advantage of the entire list of child tax credits made available to the public by the government. After taking the child tax credit you may end up with an excess of your tax liability. This amount can potentially be refunded.

This is called the Additional Child Tax Credit. The excess money left over has two different methods of calculation depending on how many children you are claiming.

One of the most prominent examples, that is sort of a passive change and savings, is the fact that savings account for children?s college accounts will be allowed to increase overtime with the ever-changing tuition fees of colleges, without incurring additional fees or taxes on the income.

529 and College Plans

Another deduction that is called the 529 plan, or just a state college-savings plan, includes the ability for parents to save money completely tax-free, with the one restriction being that you have to use the money to pay for your child?s college.

Other similar tax deductions that were made to help low-income families cover this same subject and many more, where they allow huge tax deductions to make the everyday life of families that much more bearable and affordable. For instance, the adoption credit allows up to $12,650 depending on the exact end-result of your adoption, with the credit getting lowered if you income exceeds $229,710 per year.

Another odd example of a tax deduction that can save you money, but might make you scratch your head wondering who came up with the specific laws and restrictions, includes the student loan interest tax deduction that allows students to deduct the interest of a student loan that was paid by a parent. Keep in mind that this is a parent who is not legally obligated to pay the debt, but chooses to on his or her own accord.

Tax software scans your tax return to make sure you claim every tax deduction you deserve.

Visit http://www.claimthechildtaxcredit.com/ to file your tax return with the guarantee of the biggest tax refund possible.

Five fake political types on Twitter we wish were real

13 hrs.

As we saw during the presidential campaign when Mitt Romney's official Twitter account gained more than?100,000 followers in the span of a few days, the accusation?of fake followers can cast a shadow on a politician's social media street cred, if not his career. But a satirical?Twitter account portraying a fake version of a real politician, however?vexing to the impersonated person, can be a whole lot of fun to everyone else. ?

Take, for example, the popular?@MexicanMitt ("I am the Juan percent"), a?parody Twitter account that "poked fun at Romney?s on-again, off-again relationship with Mexican ancestry."?

Though later reinstated, @MexicanMitt was?briefly bounced from the micro-blogging platform last August,?the same night Romney delivered his speech at the Republican National Convention, and Twitter launched?#RomneyRyan2012, the first national trending topic purchased by a?political?campaign. Coincidence? Though it kicked up a bit of a scandal,?Twitter wouldn't comment to NBC News or other news outlets at the time.?

Meanwhile, real?Vice?President Joe Biden took to his verified?Twitter account, when those pranksters at?the Onion recently?hosted an?"Ask Me Anything" meet-up on Reddit?with a parody version of America's vice president. The?fake?"Diamond" Joe Biden?offered answers on "my Trans Am, things you can make into a pipe, Barack, or where we can hook up later" among other things.?The real veep?one-upped the faker,?tweeting:?

OK, I know we just said that real Vice President Joe?Biden has proved himself awesome on Twitter ... but dude, unverified?@VeepJoeBiden has the impression?down cold!

Dr. Jill Biden @JillBidenVeep

Just because you've received your doctorate of education doesn't mean you're off the Twitter satire hook ... not if you're married to the vice president, who plays the perfect foil to your false persona.

Paul Ryan Gosling @PaulRyanGosling

Two great memes that taste great together! This?satirical?Twitter account ?mashes the "Hey Girl" Tumblr fun dedicated to?actor Ryan Gosling with the?oft-riffed-upon?P90 X bravado of former?vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan to create comedy gold. ?(We deleted an expletive after the?ellipses?from that final tweet, the one about John Edwards. Public trust in government, business leaders falls

Office workers walk in the business district of Madrid, Tuesday Jan. 15, 2013. Spain has sold an above-target euro 5.8 billion ($7.74 billion) in short-term bills at a sharply reduced interest rate, reflecting easing investor concern over the country's ability to manage its finances without a bailout. Spain's borrowing costs have plunged from unsustainable highs last year after the European Central Bank pledged to help countries by buying up their short-term bonds if they apply for help. (AP) ? Public trust in business, government and media leaders has fallen in the wake of financial and political scandals, according to a new global survey.

Heads of financial institutions did particularly poorly, mainly in richer countries that have suffered financial crises and fined banks for, among other things, manipulating markets and facilitating money-laundering.

The 2013 edition of the annual Edelman Trust Barometer found "a very significant crisis of leadership," said Richard Edelman, president and CEO of Chicago-based public relations firm Edelman. "Leaders are just not seen as leading."

A big problem is that people think their leaders "just can't get around to telling them the truth," he said.

As a result, people are increasingly looking to other sources of information for the straight story about what's going on, such as academic experts or even their peers through social media and the Internet.

Edelman said one of the glaring results of the annual survey, released ahead of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, was that while 50 percent respondents trusted business in general to do what is right, only 18 percent trusted business leaders to tell the truth ? a 32-percentage point gap between the institution itself and the people in charge. Government didn't look much better, with 41 percent trusting government to do what's right.

The overall share of people expressing trust in basic institutions rose in the survey from the 2012 edition, to 57 percent from 51 percent, as trust bounced back from the hit it took from the European debt crisis and disputes between President Barack Obama and Republicans in Congress over the U.S. debt limit, which caused the U.S. to losing its top credit rating. Yet while institutions were recovering some lost trust, the view of the leaders of those institutions remained sour.

Edelman suggested that the result may have been influenced by prominent corporate political and financial scandals ? the investigation into alleged rigging by big banks of the London Interbank Offered Rate, an important interest rate benchmark, insider trading cases in the United States and Britain, and the scandal surrounding Chinese politician Bo Xilai, who faces trial on corruption charges.

Leaders' truthfulness score in the survey was "pretty pathetic," Edelman told the Associated Press in an interview.

The survey measured rising levels of trust for non-government organizations. "The trust is now being placed in an expert, such as an academic, or in a peer ? someone, your friends on Facebook, or whoever," he said. "The crisis of leadership is leading to people having a very different view of who they may listen to."

The online survey queried 31,000 people in 26 countries, and broke down results between the general population and a smaller sample of university-educated, higher income people dubbed members of the "informed public." It was conducted Nov. 10-15, so it preceded the many December news stories about whether Obama and Congress would agree on a budget deal to avoid the so-called 'fiscal cliff' of automatic tax increases and spending cuts on New Year's day. As it turned out, the two sides agreed on some issues and postponed others for two months.

Among the informed public group, 69 percent viewed an academic or expert as a credible spokesperson, while 61 percent looked to "a person like yourself." CEOs lagged at 43 percent among this group.

The most trusted business sector was technology, with a 77 percent credibility rate, while banks and financial services trailed with 50 percent ? just behind the news media, which polled 53 percent.

Molecular switch enabling immune cells to better fight disease

Jan. 20, 2013 ? A research team led by the La Jolla Institute for Allergy & Immunology has discovered the mechanism that enables CD4 helper T cells to assume the more aggressive role of killer T cells in mounting an immune attack against viruses, cancerous tumors and other damaged or infected cells. The finding, made in collaboration with researchers from the RIKEN Institute in Japan, could enable the development of more potent drugs for AIDS, cancer and many other diseases based on using this mechanism to trigger larger armies of killer T cells against infected or damaged cells.

CD4 helper T cells, which normally assist other cells of the immune system during an infection, and CD8 killer T cells, which directly attack and eliminate infected cells, are two of the body's most important immune cells for defending against diseases. Earlier research studies have shown that helper T cells can become killer cells in some instances. However, the specific mechanism of action that allowed this to occur was not known until now.

"We have identified the molecular switch that enables CD4 T cells to override their programming as helper cells and transform into cytolytic (killer) cells," said La Jolla Institute scientist and study co-leader Hilde Cheroutre, Ph.D. "Our team also showed that these transformed helper T cells represent a separate and distinct population of cells. They are not a subset of TH-1 helper cells as previously thought."

Jay A. Berzofsky, M.D., Ph.D., chief of the Vaccine Branch at the National Cancer Institute's Center for Cancer Research, called the finding "a major advance" that provides new understanding about the cell's lineage and basic mechanisms. Dr. Berzofsky was among the researchers whose work in the 1980s first demonstrated that helper cells could convert to killer cells. "Understanding how these cells derive and what causes them to switch from helper T cells to cytolytic T cells is an important step to learning how to manipulate them in disease," he said, noting it could lead to novel approaches "either to turn these cells off in autoimmune disease or turn them on in infectious diseases."

He added that the finding could also have important implications in cancer. "We need all of the cytolytic machinery that we can get to try to destroy cancers," he said. "If we can learn to turn them on, I think it's reasonable to believe that these cytolytic T cells can play an important role in controlling cancer."

The findings were published January 20 in Nature Immunology in a paper entitled "Transcriptional reprogramming of mature CD4 helper T cells generates distinct MHC class II-restricted cytotoxic T lymphocytes." Dr. Cheroutre is co-senior author on the study together with Dr. Ichiro Taniuchi of the RIKEN Research Center for Allergy and Immunology in Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan. First authors on the paper are: Mohammad Mushtaq Husain, Ph.D., of the La Jolla Institute; Daniel Mucida, Ph.D., formerly of the La Jolla Institute, now at Rockefeller University; Femke van Wijk, Ph.D., formerly of the La Jolla Institute, now at the University Medical Center Utrecht, The Netherlands, and Sawako Muroi, of the RIKEN Institute.

In the study, the researchers found that a certain transcription factor, which are molecules in the cell nucleus that control the activity of cells, continually suppresses the killer T cell lineage in helper T cells. Using mice, the team showed that turning off this transcription factor (ThPOK) enabled the helper cells in the body's peripheral areas, like the blood, spleen and the intestine, to override their original programming and to become killer T cells. "While our work focused on the intestines, we found that helper T cells in all tissues of the body have the potential to become killer cells in response to recognition of viral, tumor or other antigens in the context of cytokines such as IL-15," said Dr. Cheroutre.

Jonathan Braun, M.D., chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine, praised the study as laying the groundwork for using T helper cells in a much more aggressive manner. "Helper T cells are mainly understood for their role in regulating other immune cells," he said. "This work reveals how they themselves can be triggered to become the action cells in the immune response. This opens new possibilities for how to manipulate them therapeutically in disease."

Dr. Cheroutre said the transformation of CD 4 helper T cells into killer cells already occurs in the body naturally. "Our finding could help to explain a number of occurrences that we haven't really understood up to this point, such as why some people can be chronically infected with HIV without developing AIDS." In these instances, Dr. Cheroutre is convinced that CD4 helper T cells must be taking over the role of killer cells after the CD8 T cells become exhausted. "It's like the helper cells can come in as reinforcements to keep the virus under control. If we can develop ways to artificially trigger that process, we may be able to significantly help people with HIV and other chronic infections."

While scientists would want to trigger a larger army of virus-specific killer cells in the case of infections, the opposite would be true in inflammation-fueled autoimmune diseases, like rheumatoid arthritis or multiple sclerosis, said Dr. Cheroutre. "The CD4 T cells are the bad wolves in inflammatory diseases because they often trigger more pro-inflammatory cells which worsen these conditions," she said. "With this knowledge, we may be able to prevent that by coaxing the CD4 killer cells to become regulatory cells instead, which is another one of their potential functions. In regulatory mode, the CD4 T cells suppress the immune system. This suppression reduces inflammatory cells, which is what we want to do in autoimmune diseases."

However in cancer, the CD4 T cell's regulatory function becomes problematic because they inhibit the killer T cells from destroying cancerous cells. This is because of their built-in mechanism to keep T cells from attacking the body's own cells, said Dr. Cheroutre. "Cancer cells develop from our own cells and only look a little different from healthy cells," she explained. "The killer T cells can sense that they are different and decide to eliminate them. However, the CD4 regulatory T cells frequently suppress the killer T cells and prevent them from destroying the cancerous cells. This is often how cancer cells can escape the immune system's normal action of stamping out bad cells."

Dr. Cheroutre said she believes it may be possible, using the newly discovered mechanism, to turn the CD4 regulatory T cells into killer cells that would aid, rather than block, the immune system's attack on cancerous cells.

9 Healthy Habits Open Relationships Can Teach Us | Care2 Healthy ...

Studies show that between 30 and 60 percent of married individuals in the United States will cheat at some point in their marriages. Infidelity has increased significantly among married couples in their 20s, with the Wall Street Journal reporting that, ?Between 1991 and 2006, the numbers of unfaithful wives under 30 increased by 20 percent and husbands by a whopping 45 percent.? Many people assume that affairs are a symptom of a larger problem in a relationship. But according to the Psychotherapy Networker article The New Monogamy, ?35 to 55 percent of people having affairs report they were happy in their marriage at the time of their infidelity.?

So what?s causing so many people to cheat? Some feel it?s a matter of viewing sexuality and commitment as two mutually exclusive concepts. As the Networker article suggests, many individuals in intimate relationships are making exceptions to sexual fidelity or taking alternative approaches to their sexual freedom ? and that can work as long as those decisions are agreed upon by both partners.

No matter what the agreement, though, there is one fundamental quality that, if compromised, can destroy any relationship, open or otherwise, and that?s honesty. One might say that the true dangers of non-monogamy lie in the deception. As the Networker article describes it, ?The key to these [open] arrangements, and what makes them meaningful within the framework of emotional commitment, is that there can be no secrecy between partners about the arrangements.?

Maintaining intimacy means breaking down restrictions and building up trust. It means staying close to someone without losing your unique sense of self. While it may seem counterintuitive, what I?ve found is that avoiding affairs often means offering partners more freedom, increased independence and open communication.

Here are some dos and don?ts that, based on the principles of open relationships, that can keep you and your partner excited about each other and less likely to grow apart.

1. Hold on to your friendships. Your friends bring out different aspects of your personality that are authentically you, and these relationships help keep you from losing yourself in your relationship. Good friends also offer diverse and distinct attributes to our lives. This counters the unrealistic pressure we put on ourselves to get everything from just one person or one relationship.

2. Expand your world; make new friends; try new things. Research shows that having a number of close friends adds years to your life. When relationship partners shrink their worlds to accommodate each other, the relationship suffers. Instead, meet your partner?s friends and have him or her meet yours. Try new activities together, and be open to each others? interests.

3. Keep being the individual you were before you got in the relationship. When you give up aspects of yourself, you stop being the person your partner fell in love with. When you mold yourself to suit your partner, whether he or she asks for it or not, you lose your vitality and your relationship suffers.

4. Allow your partner to keep his/her friends (regardless of gender). When you restrict your partner?s movement, he/she will start to resent you and may become less straightforward to avoid dealing with your reaction. Your partner needs to keep his/her friends for all the same reasons you need to keep yours. By letting your partner be free, you ensure that you?re his/ her ?real? choice. You don?t want someone to be with you out of obligation, guilt or fear. You want it to be because they love you (and trust you) for who you are and because you love them for exactly the same reason.

5. Don?t lie to your relationship partner, even by omission. This means not engaging in activities with other men or women you are not willing to disclose to your partner. Deceptions may seem self-preserving in the moment but they will only drive you apart in the long run. When people find out they?ve been deceived by a loved one, they will often lose any trust in that person, which then leads to either heightened jealousy, attempts to control or rejection.

6. Don?t talk about relationship problems with other potential love interests. Using someone who is not unbiased as a confidante is unwise and may drive you and your partner apart.

7. Don?t use contact with other people to make your partner jealous. This is a form of manipulation. Even if gets your partner?s attention, he/she will resent you for it and think less of you in the long run.

8. Don?t create false expectations ? in other people who may be interested in you romantically. Be clear about your boundaries. If you aren?t, your ?friend?s? expectations can lead your partner to feel unnecessarily threatened.

9. Don?t turn your partner into a parent ? where you are asking his or her permission to go out or do something on your own. In turn, don?t restrict your partner by imposing too many restraints on his/her actions. This creates a parent-child dynamic of inequality in your relationship that will have a ripple effect.

If our goal is to enjoy a rich and sustainable relationship, it is essential to maintain equality, honesty, respect and individuality. And, in many cases, these characteristics can exist among couples whether or not they?ve decided to be sexually exclusive. Sex columnist Dan Savage has stirred up controversy by talking about unrealistic or unnatural expectations we impose on monogamous relationships, even suggesting that, in some cases, ?non-monogamy can strengthen a marriage.?

Yet, for this to be possible, Savage has stressed the unwavering importance of honesty and openness. In an interview with NPR, Savage stated, ?For a non-monogomous relationship to function properly, properly meaning no blood, no tears, both persons involved have to agree on a set of rules.?

Whatever this set of rules may be for a couple, whether insisting on monogamy or making certain exceptions, that is for them alone to decide. What matters is that once we?ve decided and agreed upon the terms of our relationship, we must stand by these decisions. In doing so, we offer our partner and ourselves a certain degree of freedom and respect as the separate individuals we are.

We are then free to love our partners for who they are, not as extensions of ourselves or people we must control, watch out for or feel suspicious toward. When two people in a couple accept and appreciate each other?s uniqueness and independence, they?re often surprised by how much closer they get to each other. When we give up some control, we gain much more than we lose.

Braam Jonker Discusses Canada Coal?s Vast Nunavut Project

On December 19, Canada Coal Inc V.CCK announced it had applied for an additional 11 coal exploration licences within the Fosheim Peninsula region on Ellesmere Island, Nunavut. Once granted, this will bring the company?s total coal licence holdings to 86 covering approximately 2.7 million acres.

President/CEO Braam Jonker spoke to Kevin Michael Grace January 10.

RW: Tell me about your history in the coal industry.

BJ: I started in coal in 1999. I was with Anglo American in corporate finance. I was then CFO of Cambrian Mining, and when we sold Cambrian to Western Coal, I became the CFO. We sold Western Coal [to Walter Energy] in 2010 for just under $3 billion. I have a lot of coal experience, on the transaction side as well as the operations side.

RW: What led to the formation of Canada Coal?

BJ: Bruce Duncan, our Chairman, found out about these Nunavut assets and decided to acquire them. Bruce and I first met in mid-2010. He walked me through the assets, and I liked them a lot. They asked me if I would come on board.

RW: Why Nunavut?

BJ: The sheer size of these assets, and we know we have very good quality thermal coal up there. The work we?ve done indicates that the coal formation improves in quality as you go deeper. My view is that if we are successful in finding metallurgical coal, it would most likely be a fairly sizable deposit. There will be environmental challenges, and logistics will be difficult, but these are all things that we will need to manage once we know exactly what we have up there. There is only one way of finding out exactly what we?ve got, and so our next step to drill the most prospective areas we identified during our 2012 program.

RW: You?re now up to 86 licenses covering approximately 2.7 million acres.

BJ: That?s correct.

RW: I work that out to 4,254 square miles. That?s an enormous holding.

BJ: Yeah, it is big. Ellesmere Island has been described as an island of coal. Now, obviously, we won?t be exploring all that area. Some of it we are holding on to for strategic reasons. Our main focus now is the West Fosheim Peninsula.

RW: What did Canada Coal accomplish during 2012?

BJ: What we set out to do was basically derisk the project for everything but the drilling. Despite the historical reports that were to our disposal, there were still a lot of unanswered questions. We thought that shipping the coal would be doable, but we didn?t have confirmation. So we had a logistical study done.

It was a desktop study which indicated that there is sufficient reason to continue. As you pointed out, we have a huge, huge area, and we can?t just go in and drill everything. We had to identify the areas that would be most important to us, and we did that through a mapping and sampling program. We also wanted to confirm the results of the studies done in the 1980s, and so we took more than 200 surface samples and had those analyzed in order to confirm the quality of the coal from the outcrops.

GOP Discussing Default On Debt Ceiling

WASHINGTON (CBSMiami) ? The United States is about to hit its Congressionally mandated debt ceiling and the standoff between Congressional Republicans and the White House is threatening to send the global economy into chaos.

Some Congressional Republicans have vowed to take the debt ceiling hostage and refuse to raise the debt ceiling limit without major cuts to domestic spending, including entitlements like Social Security and Medicare.

The White House said it will not negotiate over the debt limit and will not agree to spending cuts. The White House has said previously the debt limit is Congress? responsibility for bills it?s already incurred in the past.

Congressional Republicans put together a similar plan the last time the debt ceiling needed to be raised. After refusing to raise the limit without spending cuts, the nation?s credit rating was cut for the first time in history and only after the White House relented to more than $1 trillion in cuts did the debt limit get raised.

But this time may prove to be different. The biggest question Congressional Republicans have to answer is are they willing to send the nation into default and risk global economic catastrophe to secure some spending cuts?

?No one wants to default, but we are not going to continue to give the president a limitless credit card,? Representative Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) told Politico.com.

Politico reported that Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio) is planning to meet with the entire GOP conference this weekend to explain exactly what will happen if the country defaults on its debt. Speaker Boehner is also expected to reveal his plans for cuts without any tax hikes.

?It is more likely you default than you raise any taxes,? a senior GOP aide told Politico.com.

The problem for Boehner is the majority of his Republican caucus is loathe to cutting any deal with President Barack Obama for any reason. That puts him in a difficult position because he has previously said that a default of the debt would equal ?financial disaster.?

In addition, some Republicans like Newt Gingrich the conservative editorial board of the Wall Street Journal have warned Congressional Republicans that failing to raise the debt ceiling could be political suicide for the Republican Party.

Unlike in 2011, the last time the debt ceiling was an issue, President Obama isn?t running for re-election and can take a more determined stance against Congress. Republicans in Congress have to run for re-election in just two years, making the political calculations for both sides even more important.

Republicans want a $1-for-$1 deal with the debt ceiling that will cut $1 for every $1 the debt ceiling is raised. In addition, many GOP members are pushing for the sequester, a series of spending cuts to the defense department and domestic spending totaling $1.2 trillion to go ahead.

The defense industry has warned of massive layoffs if the sequester is allowed to move forward. Social programs to help the needy would also be crippled with massive cuts included in the sequester.

The $2.2 trillion in cuts sought by the GOP would continue to impose austerity on the fragile economic recovery the U.S. is in currently. As Europeans have learned, austerity in the face of lagging unemployment and slow growth has led to even deeper recessions across the eurozone.
