What Kind of Fish are You?

ShareShare ?ShareEmail

I can?t say for certain whether New York based photographer Ted Sabarese had science or evolution in mind when he conceived of this series. But I?m almost glad he never responded to my follow-up questions about his inspiration behind these. Part of the fun of art is its mirror-like quality: everyone sees something different when faced with it because everyone brings a different set of experiences and expectations to the table. When I look at these I see equal parts ?you are what you eat,? ?your inner fish,? and ?United Colors of Benetton.?

Watch a stunning video of Jupiter rotate on its axis, as captured by a telescope (Yahoo! News)

Saturn may have a flyby clip from pictures taken by the Cassini spacecraft, but its neighboring planet Jupiter boasts a stunning photo op caught on video of its very own. The footage is composed of images taken using a camera and a one meter telescope during five days of observation (from October 10 to 15) on?Pic du Midi ?? a mountain in the French Pyrenees known for its observatory 2,800 meters above ground level.

Pic du Midi'svery stable atmospheric conditions is ideal for observing heavenly bodies ??hence the high-resolution photos of Jupiter. Watching the video, you'll see a number of the gas giant's details including the famous Great Red Spot as the planet rotates on its axis. If you have a great affinity for the biggest planet in our solar system, this clip may just tide you over until we get an even closer view of Jupiter when Juno arrives on the planet in 2016.

(AP) ? Dubai's fast-growing airline Emirates kicked off the Middle East's biggest airshow Sunday with an order for a whopping 50 Boeing 777s, marking the U.S. aircraft maker's biggest-ever single order in dollar terms.

Emirates and Boeing Co. valued the unexpectedly large deal for an extended-range version of the 777-300 at $18 billion ? the total by list price ? though the carrier is unlikely to pay that much for the planes. Airlines typically negotiate big discounts, especially when buying in bulk.

Emirates has an option to buy another 20 777s as part of the order. Doing so would push the deal's value to $26 billion.

The deal further establishes Emirates as Boeing's best customer for the twin-engine 777, a workhorse of the carrier's long-haul fleet.

Emirates already has 95 777s in service and had another 40 already on the order books. That means it now has nearly as many of the twin-aisle planes on order as it operates.

"This order further establishes our long-standing commitment to Boeing and to the 777 aircraft," Emirates Chairman and CEO Sheik Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum said in announcing the deal.

"The 777 has really served Emirates very well in terms of the seat cost, especially when we see that the fuel price today is very high," he added.

Emirates earlier this month posted a profit of $225 million for the first half of its fiscal year. That was a 76 percent decline from its earnings during the same period a year earlier, a drop it linked in part to soaring fuel prices.

Although the Gulf airlines are the among the world's most ambitious in expanding their fleets and routes, a deal the size of the Emirates contract had not been expected at the airshow, which began Sunday. It and rivals such as Abu Dhabi-based Etihad and Qatar Airways have a massive backlog of planes already on order.

Chicago-based Boeing Co. said the deal is the largest single aircraft order in dollar terms in its history.

"It sustains a lot of jobs in the United States ? several thousand," said Jim Albaugh, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

Boeing currently churns out seven 777s per month and expects to raise production levels to 8.3 of the planes a month soon, Albaugh said.

Emirates is by far the Middle East's largest carrier and has over 160 aircraft in service. It is owned by the government of Dubai, which is recovering from a debt-fueled financial crisis that came to a head two years ago.

Its young fleet also includes Airbus A330s, A340s and the double-decker A380.

Dubai's ruler, Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, attended Sunday's signing ceremony, underscoring the central role the carrier plays in the city-state's trade- and tourism-dependent economy. Emirates' CEO is the ruler's uncle.

Emirates plans to pay for its additional 777s using a variety of financing options, including U.S. government-backed export credits, Sheik Ahmed said. He said the company doesn't expect to have problems securing credit and has financing for existing plane deliveries lined up through next August.

Among the nearly 240 planes Emirates has on order are 70 Airbus A350s, a new long-range jet designed to compete against Boeing's recently introduced 787 Dreamliner.

Airbus parent company EADS NV last week took a 200 million euro ($273 million) charge to its third-quarter earnings because of a new delay in the launch of the A350. The European planemaker now expects the A350 will enter service during the first half of 2014, up to six months later than previously forecast.

Sheik Ahmed said Emirates' decision to double down on the 777 "has nothing to do with the delays on the A350," however.

"It's part of the Emirates expansion. We always find new markets," he said.

Did Apple's iOS Update Worsen iPhone 4S Battery Problems? (NewsFactor)

Has Apple worsened the reported battery problems of its iPhone 4S? An update of its iOS 5 software on Thursday is resulting in complaints about battery issues -- even by some users who previously had no problems.

The version 5.0.1 update, delivered wirelessly, was supposed to correct bugs that caused the battery drain issues for some users, as well as fixing a bug affecting iCloud documents, adding multitasking gestures to the first iPad, and improving voice recognition for users in Australia who use dictation.

Wirelessly Delivered

One user, echoing the sentiments of many on the Apple Support Forums, wrote that "I seem to be losing battery life significantly after upgrading to iOS 5.0.1!!! Both my iPod4 and iPhone4. Before, I never noticed a problem. I even restarted my phone right after installing."

Another user said that, "after upgrading to 5.0.1, my iPhone is draining the battery even faster." A user named Healy79 said that, "after installing 5.0.1 I charged it up fully before going to bed and after 7 hours just sitting there lost 79 percent, and have lost further 5 percent while logging in and typing this."

Implicit in the battery brouhaha is the memory of Apple's Antennagate, following the release of the iPhone 4.

The reports of signal strength issues with the iPhone 4 began piling up shortly after its release. Apple had been suggesting that the signal-strength issue, which occurred when a user placed a hand or finger near the antenna on the lower left side of the device, was largely an optical illusion caused by faulty software that mistakenly showed more bars "than it should for a given signal strength."

The turning point was when Consumer Reports magazine wrote that it could not recommend the device because of those issues. The non-profit organization also said that "it's the company's responsibility to provide the fix -- at no extra cost to consumers."

Better Response Now?

Consumer Reports found that a piece of duct tape or "other thick, non-conducive material over the antenna gap" fixed the problem. Its engineers tested three different iPhone 4s purchased at three separate retailers in the New York area, as well as the iPhone 3GS and the Palm Pre, also on AT&T. The other phones did not have the same problem.

In a hastily-called press conference following the Consumer Reports' evaluation, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said it would offer a free bumper case to every iPhone 4 customer, a refund for any case already purchased, or a full refund for the return of an undamaged iPhone 4.

Avi Greengart, an analyst with industry research firm Current Analysis, said that he updated three of his devices with the new iOS 5.0.1, and actually saw "battery life better than before."

Greengart noted that, in contrast to Apple's dilly-dallying during Antennagate, the company has responded quickly this time to the reports of battery life problems, including releasing an iOS version that they thought would correct the issue.

UFC on Fox video: Dos Santos says boxing coaches will make difference tomorrow night

Junior dos Santos knows all about Cain Velasquez's decorated wrestling background and legendary stamina, but he thinks his technical boxing will be the difference in making it a short night for the reigning UFC heavyweight champ.

JDS began working with famed Brazilian boxing coach Luis Carlos Dorea back in 2006. He quickly transitioned from being a guy who relied on his jiu-jitsu to one who could overwhelm opponents with good footwork, hand speed and power punching. Dos Santos said that combination will prevent the fight from going the full five rounds.

"No, no ... for sure no. I'm going to finish this fight before that. I want to finish," Dos Santos told the media gathered at the UFC on Fox workout day in Rosemead, Ca. "Heavyweight fights, when they go five rounds they're boring fights. I know Cain Velasquez is very fast. He's a different heavyweight. Me too, I'm very fast for the division too. For sure, it's going to be a war. I think it's going to finish before the third round."

Dos Santos has also worked a lot with Acelino "Popo" Freitas, a world champ at both 130 and 135 pounds. The Brazilian stopped fighting in 2007 with 38-2 record that included 36 KO's. Dos Santos' camp also covered the wrestling aspect of the fight by bringing in a huge wrestler to simulate Velasquez's hard-charging style. Josh Janousek, a squatty, fast wrestler in the mold of Velasquez has been working with JDS and Antonio Nogueira since the beginning of the year.

Nissan's showing off the Pivo 3, another EV-concept we wish it'd sell us (video)

Nissan's unveiled the Pivo 3, the latest version in the formerly egg-shaped Pivo line of Concept EVs. Ditching the spherical, independently moving cabin for a boxier, sharper look, the zero-emission car retains the roomy 1+2 configuration of it's forebears (all the better to pretend you're driving a McClaren F1) and motors mounted on each of the wheels. It's designed for the urban environment, with a tiny four-meter turning circle and automatic parking (it'll also come to you if you summon it with a smartphone). As much as we want one of these on our driveway, the company is still pondering putting it into production, and if it does arrive, it won't be until 2017 at the earliest, by which point we'll all be riding Rynos. Watch footage of the car in action, including it's snapping turning abilities at the video we've got for you after the break.

(AP) ? Up, up and away is synonymous with Superman and may have a new meaning for collectors, too, as an ultra-rare and pristine copy of Action Comics No. 1 goes up for auction online Friday.

The issue, featuring the first appearance of Superman, is expected to surpass the $1.5 million record set in 2010.

"It's an iconic milestone of the 20th century," said Stephen Fishler, CEO of ComicConnect.com and Metropolis Collectibles, of the issue, which was published in 1938 and cost just 10 cents. The auction at www.comicconnect.com lasts through Nov. 30.

The issue for sale has a story of its own that wouldn't be out of place in the pages of a comic book plot, either. Twice before it set the record for the most expensive book ever ? it sold for $86,000 in 1992 and then $150,000 in 1997. That, Fishler said, was a nod to its near mint condition.

"It is clearly one of the finest and that it's held the record for the most expensive book ever sold, speaks to that," he said of the issue, which is graded a 9.0.

In March 2010, a copy Action Comics No. 1 ? graded at 8.5 ? sold for $1.5 million, just a few weeks after another copy of the issue sold for $1 million.

Neither of those issues are in as good a condition as the issue that goes on sale Friday. There are about 100 copies of Action Comics No. 1 believed to be in existence, and only a handful in good condition.

After it was stolen in 2000 Fishler said collectors figured it would never be found or, worse, would be destroyed.

"It was so recognizable that the risk was that the person who stole it could have tried to destroy it," Fishler said of the comic, whose owner he's not identifying. "I felt there was a chance that it would never turn up."

But turn up it did, earlier this year, in a storage shed in California, that had been purchased in an auction.

"When we were contacted in April and saw a picture of the book, we were shocked," Fishler said. "After spending so many years looking for the book, I was blown away when it appeared."
