Urge Baseball Team to Cancel Cruel Animal Acts!

Mouse

?

As part of its 2012 promotions, the Frederick Keys minor league baseball team in Frederick, Maryland, has planned a June 22 monkey rodeo, in which capuchin monkeys will be forced into costumes and strapped to dogs who will race around a track at Harry Grove Stadium. The team also plans to host a July 1 dove release, after which the bird used faces the life-threatening task of finding her way home from an unfamiliar location. PETA has asked the team's general manager to replace these acts with any of the countless humane alternatives available, but our request has fallen on deaf ears.

Capuchin monkeys are hypersensitive, intelligent, and highly social animals who naturally live in large groups and spend most of their time in trees. They are notoriously high-strung and easily stressed. During monkey rodeos, they are forced to endure a bizarre and stressful ordeal that can result in injury. Birds used in dove releases often fly for days without eating or resting in a frantic attempt to get home. Many succumb to starvation, dehydration, or exposure. Others are attacked and killed by raptors. PETA has received numerous calls from people who have found horribly injured or badly malnourished birds wearing bands. (The dove release will be organized by a disreputable roadside zoo that the U.S. Department of Agriculture has accused of keeping animals in filthy and dilapidated enclosures and failing to provide proper veterinary care.)

Please urge team officials to cancel these cruel promotions.
