APIf the NCAA decides to punish the University of Miami athletics program for allegations of impermissible benefits received by players, it may not happen this year.
A Miami Herald column?from earlier this week states ?a high-level UM official said the school hasn?t been given an updated timetable by the NCAA but will not be surprised if it doesn?t receive its punishment until after National Signing Day in February.?
In 2011 just before the start of the season, the program came under the microscope when?Yahoo! Sports?released a damning feature connecting allegations of benefits deemed impermissible by the NCAA to former booster?Nevin Shapiro. In the months following the feature, and with the NCAA thoroughly investigating the program,?UM self-imposed a bowl ban following the 2011 season?hoping it would soften any potential sanctions handed down.
Though there?s been some talk of the Hurricanes receiving the infamous Death Penalty, it?s far to early in the process to know if that is even a possibility (it isn?t). It should also be noted that UM has yet to receive a formal Notice of Allegations from the NCAA.
