AutoMD's top 10 automotive repair mistakes to avoid - New Car Deals

According to a survey by AutoMD.com, about 60 percent of car owners reported paying between $500 and $2,000 dollars per year on automotive repairs, while 60 percent of those who did the maintenance themselves reported saving $500.

In response, AutoMD has posted the Top Ten Really Expensive Auto Repair Mistakes to inform car owners on unnecessary costs.

"At AutoMD.com we are always looking for ways to help car owners save precious dollars while keeping their vehicles running safely, ," said Brian Hafer, vice president of marketing at AutoMD.com. ?This is why our experts have put together a list of simple tips to help pre-empt costly auto repair mistakes.

AutoMD?s number one mistake is neglecting preventative maintenance and minor repairs, like changing oil and the filter. The list continues: not asking for parts back, neglecting tires, ignoring warning lights on the dashboard, telling a mechanic what parts to replace, not doing own easy repairs, miscommunicating the repair issue, driving on fumes, going to the dealership for every issue and taking the first quote offered.

Many of the costs are indirect with these mistakes, for instance, neglecting tires could cause even a new car to burn more fuel, let alone a used car. With AAA?s Daily Fuel Gauge Report showing gas at $3.57, inefficient tires could cost even more at the pump.
