The family of a man bludgeoned to death say they are stunned a Facebook page supposedly created for "horny" maximum security inmates at Auckland's Paremoremo prison is still live.
The page was created in November last year for "ladies looking to meet up with or write to the Mean-Breed Hardcore Crimz of Paremoremo Maximum Security Prison in Auckland NZ".
"If you keep it real with anyone of these men, you may find yourself a deadly but loyal Guardian!!," the description of the page reads.
Mikhail Pandey-Johnson and Karl Nuku, who were convicted for bludgeoning Dean Browne, 38, to death with a hammer as he slept in his flat in Wellington on January 23, 2010, feature on the page.
Browne's parents, Faye and Ron Bishop said they could not believe the page was still live, telling the Herald on Sunday it was "ghoulish" and "sick".
The page has 43 likes, and features pictures, including mugshots, of criminals with an address for women to write to the men.
"We are some horny men looking for some horny chicz to write us some horny az letters," one post reads.
An image of convicted killer and repeat prison escaper Dean Wickliffe was the first to be posted on the page.
A spokeswoman for the Department of Corrections told the Herald the contents of the Facebook page were "inaccurate, spurious and misleading".
"The public can be assured that prisoners do not have access to the internet.
"Maximum security is our highest form of security and prisoners housed here are considered to be an ongoing threat to staff, other prisoners and the community."
Nikki Tata, who posts messages on the page on behalf of the men, told the Herald on Sunday wardens were aware of the page, and said the prisoners needed contact.
"From what I've been told, they appreciate the letters. It helps them stay connected to the outside world.
"These men are in prison for a long time. Some of these men won't be getting out. I've spoken with a few of the wardens. They said: 'Please write'."
