Just Do Something: A Book Review

Each week, Ryan would return from his men?s group with rave reviews of Kevin DeYoung?s Just Do Something: A Liberating Approach to Finding God?s Will or How to Make S decision without dreams, visions, fleeces, impressions, open doors, random Bible verses, casting lots, liver shivers, writing in the sky, etc.

?Seems as if the topics in this slim volume were really hitting home for all of the men. Without reading it myself, I noticed that Ryan suddenly put his foot down, limited his research-time, and just decided stuff. He ordered our now-gorgeous orchard. He ordered our now-laying chickens. He tilled the garden and planted the thing. In the past, I would never ? never ? have even come close to identifying Ryan as needing inspiration to work hard or make hard choices, but I did notice a stark difference in his confidence and courage. We all want to make ?the right decisions? and to do well by Consumer Reports and Amazon reviews (not to mention, we want to walk in God?s good and perfect will!), but really, all of the limitless options and resources can stall a person out and can steal precious time.? Wow, I thought, if this book is impacting my very hard-working husband in a positive way, it?s gotta have some gems in there for me!

So, when I finally sat down with the book, I devoured the thing.

And I should probably devour it again.

Did DeYoung know that his insights would be so personally helpful to an expectant homeschooling mother who simply desires to do her best building her home, her church, and her community? Whether he knew it or not, he helped to demystify God?s will regarding curriculum choices; he helped me to sort through the static of ?good, better, best? when it comes to our daily schedule and activities; he also encouraged me to take steps towards starting a local women?s Bible study, which is something I?ve wanted to do ? but have hesitated to do ? for some time now.

Just Do Something is our #1 graduation gift, our #1 recommendations for summer reading, and my #1 recommendation to you.

May 30 (2009) Health Care Rally

As many as 5,000 people are estimated to have participated in Seattle?s March and Rally for Health Care Reform on May 30, 2009.

Now is the time for health care reform. Tens of thousands of people die every year in this country because of a lack of health coverage. Countless others struggle under crushing medical debt or suffer through treatable illnesses. People of color, particularly African Americans, Native Americans, and Latinos, face poorer health outcomes and are less likely to have health coverage.

Health care reform won?t happen without a grassroots movement. President Obama has repeated what FDR said when he was being lobbied to pass some of the progressive social programs of the New Deal: ?Make me do it.?

Major marches and rallies have influenced policy makers throughout the history of our country. and now is the time to demonstrate the will of the people and raise the demand for quality, affordable health care for all.

The May 30th March for Health Care will build toward health care reform efforts on a national scale. States around the country will be holding events throughout April and May that build to a June 25th national event with tens of thousands of people in Washington D.C.

Mothers Leading the Way: The mother?s theme puts forward a powerful message that connects people across communities to the fight for national health care reform. The march is for everyone ? not for mothers only! But the theme is important because regardless of a person?s personal connection to motherhood, highlighting mothers highlights the impact the health care system has on our families and on our communities.

Meanwhile, the median expense paid by women under 45 years old using high?deductible health plans is 66-0 more than it is for men. A year ago, 74.6 percent of health care workers in America identified as women. And while we recognize that not all women are mothers, women as mothers play a significant role in their families? health care, with 8 in 10 mothers taking on the chief responsibility for their children?s health care.

Understanding (and Working) the Lifecycle of Executive ...

Skillful negotiation lies at the heart of many protective executive compensation deals ? whether the deals involve employment, change of control, severance or something else.

Understanding the law (employment, securities, contract, intellectual property and tax), the requisite documents, and the pertinent business environment behind a deal is critical, of course ? but a significant part of the battle lies in understanding the art of negotiation.

On both sides of the table, executive compensation negotiations involve people ? some of whom are smart, competent and honest; and some of whom may be just the opposite.? They do not always act rationally or as expected.? In spite of the best due-diligence, it is often impossible to predict the roadmap of a negotiation.

You can study texts on negotiation or game theory, but at the end of the day only experience lets you know what to expect from a variable set of circumstances ? and how to respond.

There are stages to the negotiation lifecycle ? each of which must be managed differently.

For example, consider the (roughly) three stage negotiation. the beginning stage of the negotiation lifecycle includes initial positioning and signaling.? both parties may send up trial balloons.? Inexperienced negotiators might see these as deal-breakers, while an experienced negotiator knows that the chosen executive may have significant leverage, leverage that may cause an employer to drop what was initially a ?deal-breaking? term.

The middle stage of the negotiation lifecycle may involves additional positioning and signaling, possibly bouts of intransigence or horse-trading, and perhaps multiple offers and counteroffers.? At this stage, it is important to remember that any clause (unless illegal) can be written into a contract ? even clauses not yet invented!

The end of the negotiation lifecycle involves a convergence of positions into an agreement or, alternatively, an impasse and the breakdown of the negotiation.? A skilled attorney/negotiator should be able to help you navigate this area.

In a previous post ? when negotiating executive compensation, you need your own counsel ? I mentioned that executives are usually better off negotiating for themselves (using their own attorney as ?shadow counsel?) during the initial stages of negotiation ? and bringing in their own counsel during the later ?term-defining? stages.

Knowledge is important when negotiating executive compensation, but experience in the negotiation lifecycle accounts for a significant part of the battle.

Email woes and etiquette ? Robby Pedrica's Tech Blog

Based on issues that a client of mine has had in recent times with email, I decided to resurrect and rehash my XStore IT Bulletin no. 1 from July 2006.

One of the biggest issues with email is the lack of understanding of how it works. In addition, the requirement to implement anti-spam solutions falls foul of the lack of etiquette and/or knowledge of most email senders. Most email users don?t understand that their misuse ( due to ignorance or lack of knowledge ) of email solutions directly impacts the smooth operation of email systems. The more misuse, the more issues there are.

And so it?s in everyone?s interest to learn how to use email properly and effectively. What are the main issues?

The 1st cardinal sin is the forwarding of emails without merit. Chain emails are often carriers of virus and malware, and as such, the forwarding of these emails, directly impacts the security of your recipients.

The 2nd major issue is formatting of emails. This includes content, subject lines and addressing. Anti-spam solutions look at all these areas? to make a decision as to whether they think an email is spam or not.

3rd is the idea ( and expectation ) that email systems offer guaranteed delivery. SMTP ( the protocol used to send email ) was never designed with guaranteed delivery in mind. Although mechanisms were built-in to work around Internet and system failures, delivery of emails is a haphazard affair. The fact that it works well most of the time is a testament to the original specification?s quality, and additions that have been made since then. However, don?t assume that if you send an email, that it will received. And don?t count on it for critical business or life-threatening situations.

How does email work?

When you send email from your email application, it will travel as follows:

  • from your desktop to your sending/outgoing server ( you may have one at your business or use your ISP?s )
  • from your business email server or ISP to the recipient?s email server
  • the recipient then reads the email off their server

Along the way, there are a number of checks done, both by your sending server and by the receiving server. Your server would for example, make sure that the recipient domain ( @domain.co.za ) exists. The recipient server would perform a number of anti-spam checks.

Spam is an unfortunate reality of life when it comes to email usage. There are a number of ways we can reduce the spam volume received everyday using our email servers without negatively impacting our users.

a. Anti spam engine

Anti spam engines such as SpamAssassin and PureMessage work using a multitude of modes and tests including header and text analysis, Bayesian filtering, DNS blocklists, and collaborative filtering databases. A score is calculated based on these tests and if that score exceeds a preset value, the email is tagged as spam.

b. DNS blocklists ( RBL / DNSBL )

When an email is received, the email server checks the name of the sending server. If that name exists on a preset database ( there are many of these on the Internet ), the email is blocked or rejected.

c. Content filtering

Checks can be done on the header and body contents of emails to find specific instances of words, characters or phrases. If found, the email is blocked or rejected

d. Grey listing

When an email is received with a first time combination of sender, recipient and sending server, the email is temporarily rejected. On retry the email will be accepted. The basis for this mechanism is the fact the very few spam servers would resend an email.

Email servers can deal quite effectively with spam but one needs to make use of all the available options to combat this problem. The flip side is that we need to take care when sending emails, as this will assist the server actions that are taken.

Here are some basic ideas that one should use when sending email:

  • do not forward chain letters or suspicious emails
  • do not cc recipients in a general email, use bcc instead ? most recipients do not want their email addresses being seen by others and in addition this is a security hazard ( most email clients automatically add cc?d address in received emails to their address books; a subsequent virus infection on one those recipients would then be sent to everyone in their address book )
  • only use cc where a recipient is directly required to respond to your email
  • do not respond to unsubscribe requests in spam
  • never reply to spam
  • use text email where possible instead of rich text email with pictures, etc.
  • clearly think about the contents of email with respect to spam filters and the like
  • check the size of an email before sending it ? many companies do not have much Internet bandwidth and these emails
  • might be blocked or filtered as a result
  • check with your IT support if you?re unsure whether an email address is valid or not
  • make use of filters in your email client to filter out spam
  • learn about the built-in anti-spam features in your email client
  • make use of good email etiquette ? you are representing your company
  • do not use your business email address to subscribe to websites on-line unless they are business-related

There is much more to email etiquette and use; if you?d like to know more, please check the following links:

http://www.emailreplies.com/

http://iwillfollow.com/email.htm

The misuse and incorrect use of email systems can directly cause one to receive more spam and security-related emails, so it?s in your interest to learn how to use email more effectively and safely.
