How does it work?
It is important to note that the aim of any type of spectroscopy is to measure the absorption of certain wavelengths of light by a solid, liquid, or gas. The traditional way to do this was to shine different wavelengths of monochromatic light at the substance being analyzed and noting the absorbed and dispersed wavelengths. The main deviation of this by the FTIR method is that it shines a beam of light which contains light of many frequencies at the same time. The amount of the beam that is absorbed is then measured. After this, in order to have another set of data, the beam is modified so that it now contains different spectra of frequencies. This is done over and over again and at the end of it all, all the data is fed into a computer program and this program works to deduce what the absorption rate is for each of the frequencies that were shone towards the substance.
What is FTIR used for?
FTIR has come to be applied in a lot of areas: both scientific and in others that are less so. For example, this technique is used in the identification of minute amounts of a substance in a mixture. This is mostly seen in forensic analysis. Another use of it is the checking of artistic materials that are used in old-master paintings. This spectroscopy method helps identify the real paintings from the fake ones. It is also used in combination with a gas chromatographin gas chromatography where it is used to deduce the presence of certain gasses in a mixture.? In this way, it can also be used to identify isomers in an element in the same way that an inferred spectrophotometer does. There are so many more used of this method of spectroscopy and most of them involve the identification of different substances in a mixture or the separation of the same.
