Roomba recycled into Google-powered telepresence bot

2 hrs.

A partially destroyed Roomba has been given a second life as a telepresence robot controlled via a Google+ Hangout. The bot, named Oscar, can be driven?by any of the participants in the video chat session, which as one might imagine, makes it a bit squirrely to control.

It's a fairly straightforward demo of the Google+ Hangout API (application programming interface), which lets developers use the video chat tool in their projects. In this case it's a Google employee who seems to have done it during his spare time.

The original Roomba was "hurt in a freak robot melting accident," but a little fiddling with the Roomba's well-known circuitry let it communicate with a Web server and take commands. He?then mapped those commands to some buttons, plastered them into a custom Google+ Hangout, and the project was live.

Everyone can see the robot's view, since there's a tablet with a webcam mounted on it. And anyone near the robot can see the Hangout as well. There are more capable telepresence robots out there, but it's a fun project nevertheless. If you're interested in how it was done, all the code and instructions can be found on creator Gus Class' website.

The public can get a look at Oscar during a public Hangout?Friday at 10 a.m. PT.?In the meantime, you can watch the video of him in action below.

Which Clearwater & Oldsmar Intersections Will Issue Red-Light ...

Red light camera 2Many car accidents occur at intersections. Of those, many are caused by someone running a red light. But, are red light cameras the answer? Clearwater and Oldsmar officials think so.

Starting yesterday, the warning period is over and the tickets will be issued if the camera catches you running the red light at two major Clearwater intersections -- the Gulf-to-Bay Blvd and Belcher intersection and the Chestnut Street and S. Fort Harrison intersection. The Gulf to Bay Blvd. and Belcher Rd. intersection cameras will be focused on east and west bound Gulf to Bay traffic. Chestnut Street at S. Fort Harrison will be monitored eastbound. Officials say 250 car automobile crashes were caused by drivers running red lights at these intersections in the past three years.

According to ABC Action News, more than 700 warnings were sent to motorists that had been caught by the cameras in the month of July.

Oldsmar drivers, you're not dodging the camera. Starting today, Oldsmar will have cameras at four intersections watching for red-light runners with three of them on Tampa Road -- Gull Aire and Curlew Rd; Tampa Rd. and State Route 580; Tampa Road and St. Petersburg Drive; and Tampa Road and Forest Lakes Blvd. If you are caught running the light, look in your mail for a $158 ticket.

How do they work? If you go over the white line at more than 15 mph, the camera's sensor will be triggered and it will take your picture and then the police will review the photo or the video to see if you broke the law. The camera takes two photos from the rear: one of the vehicle before the intersection with the light red, and a second one of the vehicle in the intersection.

Whether it is at an intersection that had cameras or not, drive safely and watch out for those who don't. A few extra seconds could save your life or the life of those in your car.

PFT: Jones-Drew still at impasse with Jaguars

Philip Rivers, Norv TurnerAP

Philip Rivers doesn?t need to look at last year?s record, or two straight years without the playoffs, to know the end could be near for the Chargers as we know them.

Rivers told Alex Marvez of FoxSports.com and Gil Brandt on Sirius XM NFL Radio that the retirements of former teammates LaDainian Tomlinson and Kris Dielman were a clear sign to him.

?What hit me right in the face was this doesn?t last forever,? Rivers said. ?This does come to an end.?

That could be a theme, as general manager A.J. Smith, coach Norv Turner and a lot of folks are sitting on hot seats if the Chargers don?t turn things around in 2012.

Rivers said the Chargers have taken on a ?backs-against-the-wall mentality.?

?We?re driven by not making the playoffs, not playing to our standard and not playing consistent,? safety Eric Weddle said. ?We love our coach. We love this organization. But we don?t know what the future holds. All we can worry about is each day, each meeting, each practice and getting the most out of now.?

That?s why the Chargers are doing business differently this year.

Previously uneasy about free agency in general, Smith signed 17 free agents this offseason, while keeping with his previous tack of keeping core players such as left tackle Jared Gaither?and center Nick Hardwick.

Smith described the depth additions as ?layering? as he hopes to avoid the kind of injury fueled collapse that marked last year, during a six-game losing streak. The fact their 8-8 record was still nearly enough, losing playoff tiebreakers to Denver, made it sting that much more.

?In hindsight, maybe if I had done a better job in some backup situations, instead of six (losses) we do three,? Smith said. ?You do the math.?

There were other problems, as they?ve changed defensive coordinators, added pass-rushers and made up for the loss of Vincent Jackson by buying receivers in bulk.

All those adjustments better pay off, or the more significant changes are still in the Chargers? future.

Sudan protesters want justice after 8 killed: witnesses

Sudanese protesters called for justice on Wednesday, after at least eight people died in violence unprecedented since Arab Spring-style demonstrations began in mid-June, witnesses said.

The mostly youthful protesters gathered in Nyala, capital of South Darfur state, to vent their anger after the killings during a much larger protest on Tuesday sparked by high prices, the witnesses said.

"We want justice," they shouted. "We want retribution."

Police fired tear gas and the sound of gunfire was heard but there were no apparent injuries, the witnesses said, adding protesters set tyres alight in the streets.

They called for the overthrow of the state governor and of the government in Khartoum after the first officially confirmed deaths related to scattered anti-regime protests, which have taken place around Sudan for more than six weeks.

The SUNA news agency quoted police as saying eight citizens were killed during Tuesday's unrest.

An activist youth movement, Sudan Change Now, accused security forces of firing live ammunition and said 12 citizens, many of them young people, were killed.

Police did not give the cause of death but said officers used a "low level of force" to control the situation after demonstrators burned a petrol station and police facilities in Nyala.

The demonstrators had stoned government buildings and burned tyres during Tuesday's rally, a witness said.

Some activists in the capital Khartoum have said that although tear gas, rubber bullets and beatings have been commonly used against protesters, the government fears creating a martyr.

In 1964, the death of student Ahmed al-Qureshi sparked Khartoum's "October Revolution" which brought down the military government then in power.

During an economic crisis in 1985, huge crowds in the capital marched in an uprising which led to the bloodless overthrow of president Gaafar al-Nimeiry.

Sudanese proudly point to this history which occurred long before the Arab Spring revolts in Egypt, Tunisia, Syria and elsewhere since late 2010.

However, an analyst on Wednesday doubted the Darfur killings would be the spark for wider protests, partly because Darfuris are looked down upon by others in what has become a society divided on ethnic and other lines.

"The current government for many years just increased the divide," said the analyst, asking not to be named.

Banditry, inter-ethnic fighting and clashes between rebel groups and government forces continue in Darfur although violence is much lower than at its peak in 2003 and 2004 after non-Arab ethnic groups rose up against the Khartoum regime.

The United Nations says more than 300,000 people died in Darfur, while the Khartoum government put the death toll at 10,000.

The analyst said that while the central government has generally been "so cautious" in handling the protests, security personnel dispatched on Tuesday may have been edgy and lacking skill.

"If you go to Darfur, you don't get your best forces. People are less trained, less prepared and they are also frequently much more at risk," he said.

The South Darfur government said Tuesday's protest started because students objected to new transport prices but "other groups" joined in to attack government property.

Demonstrations in Sudan began last month when University of Khartoum students voiced opposition to high food prices, starting the longest-running public challenge to the 23-year regime of President Omar al-Bashir.

Protests have dwindled during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which began on July 20.

But a strike by public transport drivers upset over high fuel prices has added to the burden of Nyala residents.

In other violence, a district chief in North Darfur state died from gunshot wounds after an ambush of his car, official media said.

Carjackings occur relatively frequently in Darfur but such attacks against government officials are rare in Sudan.

There was no indication of who may have carried out the attack.
